SOUTH AFRICA’S TAXMAN GOES GLOBAL
South Africa has long faced the reality of ‘flight’ by citizens to other countries for a myriad of reasons, including lack of economic opportunity and the prevalence of crime.
South African officials accordingly have long focused on these expats as a potential source of income, with the discussion most notably bubbling to the surface during parliamentary hearings in 2017. In those hearings, government officials, in particular from the South African Revenue Service (SARS), quoted the number of South Africans abroad and the discrepancies between tax disclosures and bank information of South African expats.
Hence, in the minds of some officials, the arrival of a worldwide tax system in South Africa could not come soon enough for a country with a burgeoning national debt that struggles to generate higher tax revenue. Expected to come into effect on 1 March 2020, an amendment to the South Africa Income Tax Act will require South African citizens to pay taxes to South Africa regardless of where income is earned (including on benefits such as housing and flights).
AFRICA’S DIGITAL ECONOMY POISED TO EXPLODE AS REGIONAL INTEGRATION OPENS NEW MARKETS
“Africa has shown it can deliver. Cross-border private sector “champions” are essential – Pierre Guislain, African Development Bank Vice President
With Africa’s digital economy taking off exponentially, the continent must ready itself to maximize the potential dividends of the Continental Free Trade Area agreement, panel members told a packed auditorium in Kigali at the opening of Transform Africa Summit 2019 on Tuesday.
Key to this effort will be connectivity, data and digitization and innovation among others, conference attendees heard.
“Africa can achieve a digital single market...It is a journey and we need to break it up into doable bits, “African Development Bank Vice-president, Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialization Pierre Guislain, said, adding that the European Union had demonstrated that it could be achieved.
Other members of the panel Lacina Kone, Director General / CEO of Smart Africa, the conference organizers, Fatoumata Ba, CEO Janngo, Nic Rudnick, CEO Liquid Telecom Group and Elsie Kanza, Head of Africa, World Economic Forum, shared similar sentiments.
This year’s summit which is themed Boosting Africa’s Digital Economy, aims to showcase success stories in the African digital economy and promote homegrown businesses, innovations, solutions and partnerships.

WHY BANKS NEED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE - PART 2
![]() |
| By Kelvin Mkwawa, Seasoned Banker. |
Additionally, I shared that with money laundering continuing to be a persistent problem for banks, AI can assist banks to combat this threat through advanced data analytics systems to save the banks from being fined more frequently due to inadequacies in their anti-money laundering infrastructures. This week is a continuation of last week’s article. In this article,I will share a few more examples of how AI can impact the banking industry.
- Enhances Customer Service Experience – Customer experience is one of the areas that can be enhanced through AI as quick support can be easily provided to the customer along with tailored banking products according to his/her needs. Based on past dealings and data (detailed customer’s demographics and records of online and offline transactions), AI can develop a better understanding of customers and their behaviour. This enables banks to customize financial products and services by adding personalized features and intuitive interactions to deliver meaningful customer engagement and build strong relationships with their customers. One form of AI that helps banks tremendously is Chatbots. Chatbots are automated service assistants that provide customers with the convenience of resolving their queries via an online messaging system instead of having to visit a branch. Chatbots offer efficient, systematic and accurate conversations which lead to a great customer service experience. In addition, as technology evolves, AI has been able to offer voice bots as well to solve customer’s issues without human intervention.
- Enhances Mobile Banking Apps – To meet today’s customer expectations, most of the banks are shifting more into offering digital services and products which have resulted into millions and millions of transactions being done online irrespective of time and place worldwide. AI can be integrated into the bank’s mobile apps to improve customer service. How? After gathering the customer’s data from the mobile device, the AI system incorporated in mobile apps processes the data to understand the customer’s behaviour to provide the relevant information – services and offers in line with the customer’s needs. Also, the mobile app with AI will assist the customers when it comes to personalized planning. For example, if a customer wants to buy a new house, the mobile app can guide the customer with budget and other related details to help the customer achieve that goal.
