“This substantial support from the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, We-Fi, will help us scale up our actions and achieve greater results for women entrepreneurs across the continent” - Vanessa Moungar, Bank’s Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society.
The Governing Committee of the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) has approved a funding allocation of $61.8 million for the African Development Bank’s Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) program.
We-Fi is a partnership among 14 donor governments, eight multilateral development banks, and other public and private sector stakeholders, established in October 2017 and hosted by the World Bank Group.
“This substantial support from the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative, We-Fi, will help us scale up our actions and achieve greater results for women entrepreneurs across the continent. Our ambition with AFAWA goes beyond regular assistance to women in business,” Vanessa Moungar, the Bank’s Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society said about the announcement.
With the We-Fi funding, AFAWA intends to improve access to finance for 40,000 women-owned/led small and medium enterprises in 21 African countries, mainly in low-income and fragile countries, where women entrepreneurs face greater challenges in accessing finance, markets, knowledge, and mentoring programs. Specifically, the program’s activities will be implemented in Botswana, Burundi, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

CONGO: AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK PRESIDENT AKINWUMI ADESINA ENDS VISIT, REAFFIRMING STRONGER TIES AND INCREASED SUPPORT
African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina completed a three-day visit to the Republic of Congo on 12 May 2019, reaffirming the Bank's strong partnership with the Central African country.
At a meeting with Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso in his hometown, Oyo, some 460 km from the capital, Brazzaville, Adesina declared the Bank’s support for the country’s development plans.
“I wish to inform you that the African Development Bank will continue to support the Government of Congo and the implementation of the National Development Plan. I have great confidence in your leadership and the excellent work and efforts of the government,” Adesina said.
Congo is the fourth largest Sub-Saharan oil producer, with an output of 360,000 barrels-per-day from reserve estimates of around 1.6 billion barrels. It produces around 240 million cubic feet of gas daily from reserves estimated at 111 billion cubic feet.
While commending the country’s bold steps to deal with internal debt, Adesina said the government needed to create incentives in the non-oil sector to spur manufacturing and industry to boost private sector investments and small-to-medium businesses.
The African Development Bank delegation, led by Adesina, and accompanied by President Nguesso, visited the Port of Oyo and other projects including a High School of Technology with the capacity to enroll up to 10,000 students.
10 WAYS TO TRICK YOUR BRAIN INTO BEING MORE PRODUCTIVE, ACCORDING TO A NEUROSCIENTIST
- You can trick your brain into getting more done by keeping smartphones out of sight, focusing on one task at a time, and wearing the same clothes everyday.
- Here are 10 ways to trick your brain into getting more done.
Aside from actual work, employees waste more time with constant distractions, meetings, and emails than ever, according to software company Atlassian . Technology hasn't helped: on average, Vox found workers send Slack messages every 12 minutes in an eight-hour workday.
In conjunction to the constant barrage of distractions, employees and executives around the world complain of burnout and stress, particularly at large tech companies .
The paradox between the decline in productive work during the day and the feeling of being constantly overworked could boil down to your biology, UC Berkeley cognitive neuroscientist Sahar Yousef told the audience at Adobe's 99U conference, which brought together creative experts in fields from virtual reality to interactive art.
Everything about the workday has changed, Yousef said: most communication no longer occurs in person; technology allows workers to constantly be plugged into work regardless of a 9-to-5 schedule; you have coworkers around the world; and open offices have replaced cubicles.
Our bodies are the only thing that haven't changed, Yousef added. Many of us have not adapted our biology or rewired our brains to the tech that transformed our workplaces.
"We've created amazing new tech and devices, but the crux of the problem is that we're not changing we're still ancient, we still have this old biology," Yousef told the audience. "Until we actually stop fighting our biology and embrace it and leverage it, it's going to feel like an uphill battle."
Yousef explained ways to rewire your workday to get the most out of your body's optimal performance ability. Here are 10 ways to trick your brain into getting more done, according to Yousef.

| Certain lines may make you come off like you're trying too hard. |
- Most people know to prepare what they'll say before an upcoming job interview, but it's important to also think about what you shouldn't say.
- Certain lines may make you come off like you're trying too hard, so it's best to avoid them if you can.
- For instance, if you compliment your interviewer on their outfit or offer to bring coffee, you could come across as inauthentic.
- Similarly, saying it's your "dream" to work at the company is vague and empty; try instead to be specific and detailed about why you're right for the position.
But have you thought about what you absolutely shouldn't say?
These seven lines may make you come off like you're trying too hard, so avoid them the best you can.

ATLAS MARA SWAPS FOUR AFRICAN BANKS FOR STAKE IN KENYA'S EQUITY
Atlas Mara Ltd. is shaking things up by exiting some of its operations on the continent in exchange for a share of Kenya’s biggest bank by market value.
The sub-Saharan African bank, founded by ex-Barclays Plc chief Bob Diamond, will swap its operations in Rwanda, Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania for a 6.27 percent stake in Nairobi-based Equity Group Holdings Plc, Atlas Mara said in a statement on Tuesday. The transaction is worth about 10.7 billion shillings ($106 million), Equity said in a separate statement.
The reorganization, which sees Chief Executive Officer John Staley stepping down to pursue other interests, comes after a review of the business that has struggled to contain costs that engulfed income and its share price plummeted more than 80 percent since being listed in London at the end of 2013. Atlas Mara faced much stronger and bigger lenders in the seven African nations where it operates, and also received criticism for overpaying for some acquisitions.

The Atlas Mara executive team will report to Chairman Michael Wilkerson, who also chairs Fairfax Africa Holdings Corp., which holds 49 percent of Atlas Mara after injecting funding into the company. Getting a stake in Equity Group means Atlas Mara becomes a meaningful shareholder in “one of Africa’s most successful and well-run banks,” the company said.
The transaction will result in increased scale in Rwanda and Tanzania once Atlas Mara and Equity combine their operations there, Atlas Mara said. The deal will allow Equity Group to expand its footprint in Africa, the Kenyan lender said.

KENYA AIRWAYS POSTS $75M LOSS
National carrier Kenya Airways posted a Ksh7.55 billion ($74.59 million) net loss for year ended December 2018 as higher costs offset a jump in revenue.
The carrier's full-year results do not have a comparable period because KQ, as the airline is known by its international code, in 2017 changed its reporting period from ending in March 31 to now end in December 31.
However, KQ had made a net loss of Ksh6.41 billion ($63.32 million) in the 9-month period between April 1 and Dec 31 2017.
The company’s revenue in 2018 hit Ksh114.18 billion ($1.13 billion), largely driven by passenger bookings.
Its revenue in the previous 9-month period stood at Ksh80.7 billion ($797.24 million).
It's total operating costs stood at Ksh114.87 billion ($1.13 billion) in the period under review.
