KCB, with a customer base of 4.1 million as at end of December, is Kenya’s third-largest lender by number of clients.
“We are delighted to announce that we signed on our 10 millionth customer this week, and this cements CBA’s credentials as the category leader in this space,” said CBA group managing director Isaac Awuondo Thursday in a statement.

EVERYTHING WE JUST LEARNED ABOUT THE APPLE WATCH

It goes on sale April 24 and ranges from $349 to upwards of $10,000
Apple gave more details about its upcoming smartwatch, the Apple Watch, at a press briefing in San Francisco Monday. Some six months after unveiling the device, CEO Tim Cook filled in many of the blanks, such as how much various versions will cost and how long the built-in battery will last.
Cook revealed more about the device’s price. The Watch, which comes in three distinct lines and various metals, is the most customizable device the company has ever sold. The entry-level Watch Sport will cost $349 and $399, depending on the size of the body, 38 millimeters or 42 millimeters. The mid-tier Watch collection will range from $549 to $1099. The top-of-the-line Watch Edition will retail for $10,000 and up. Cook said the later device will be available in limited quantities and only in certain stores.
Apple will begin taking Watch pre-orders on April 10, and is planning to offer a preview program to let customers try the devices on in stores. The Apple Watch will go on sale April 24.
Cook also reviewed the device’s major features, including receiving and making phone calls, reading email, making wireless payments, controlling the music on a connected iPhone, and tracking exercise. Apple’s CEO touted features that let two Apple Watch owners send each other animated messages and imprints of their heart beats. Many of those features had been presented last year.
The Apple Watch will be able to run third-party apps, much like iPhones and iPads, and the firm showed off a few new examples. Kevin Lynch, the company’s vice president of technology, demonstrated a weather application powered by The Weather Channel. Another, messaging app WeChat, works on the Watch much like it does on a smartphone, allowing users to send one another text and images. Other apps included Facebook’s Instagram, ride-hailing app Uber, music app Shazam, and a ticketing system for American Airlines.

DAR ES SALAAM STOCK EXCHANGE RANKED AFRICA'S 2014 TOP PERFORMER
Strong foreign investor participation in 2014 gave regional bourses their best year on record with most investors making handsome returns, especially at Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), which was ranked Africa’s’ best stock exchange last year.
The local companies index climbed 27 per cent last year, the highest in the region.
In August last year, Tanzania removed the 60 per cent cap on foreign investors, making shares of some of the country’s largest, most profitable companies accessible to non-Tanzanians for the first time in years. The resulting inflow of foreign cash improved the bourse’s performance.

AIRTEL INVESTS IN UPGRADE OF KENYA NETWORK

| Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi and Ebru Africa’s Zippy Wanjiru. Airtel is upgrading its network. |
Airtel officials said its indoor coverage in major Kenyan cities had been affected by increased urbanisation and its current spectrum on 1800Mhz.
New, tall buildings across major cities are blocking base stations requiring operators to shift the stations and deploy stronger spectrums that allow transmission of voice, messages and data.
“We are going to launch 3G (UMTS) services in 900Mhz spectrum in major cities and make the network 4G LTE ready,” said Airtel Kenya in a statement.
The second largest mobile operator by subscriber numbers has upgraded all sites in Mombasa and Kitale, and Nairobi is in progress. With the growing demand for data services, alongside the increasing proliferation of smartphones, the 900Mhz spectrum upgrade project significantly enhances indoor coverage penetration and improves data quality for 3G network users.
TANZANIA TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANY LIMITED TO ENTER MOBILE MARKET BY END OF YEAR
The Tanzania Telecommunications Company Ltd (TTCL) will enter the mobile phone sector by the end of this year, and compete directly for more than 30 million subscribers.
The state corporation will move from Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to Global System for Mobile (GSM) services. GSM is the most widely used digital wireless telephone system in the world.
The transfer from DCMA to GSM will enable the TTCL Sim card to be used in all types of mobile phone handsets. Currently the Tanzania mobile companies that use GSM are Airtel, Vodacom, Zantel, Tigo and Smart.
TTCL head of business unity Fredrick Mloka said that by 2020 the firm aims to have 2.5 million to 3.4 million subscribers, about 10 per cent of the market. The company currently has 260,000 subscribers on its landline and mobile services.
Mr Mloka said they will introduce a mobile money transfer product called TTCL Pesa. He said TTCL is moving from CDMA to GSM via Long Term Evolutions (LTE).
“We expect to get a positive growth by the second year,” he said.

At least 10 institutions have already been integrated into the system. They are the Finance, Health and Agriculture ministries, OBR, Burundi Bureau of Standards, the Central Bank, the Burundi Investment Promotion Authority, inspection companies, the police and banks with electronic payments.
Burundi’s Second Vice-President Gervais Rufyikiri said the project will reduce the time taken in Customs procedures and controls, as well as help in the fight against fraud and corruption.
“The system is expected to increase revenue collection through transparency and also ensure the safety of the taxpayers,” Dr Rufyikiri said.
NIGERIA'S KEYSTONE BANK SELLS STAKE IN ORIENT, EXITS UGANDA

Unlike Global Trust, which was wound down to protect depositors’ interests due to the bank’s failure to shore up its capital position, the Orient sale is part of the unbundling of assets that PHB Bank, which is currently under administration, had acquired.
Orient founder Ketan Morjaria, who kept 20 per cent stake when he sold the majority shares to PHB in 2009, bought back into the bank, increasing his equity to 49 per cent, the maximum allowed by industry rules. 8 Mile, a private equity fund associated with Irish musician and activist Bob Geldof, acquired 42 per cent of the bank. Two other investors acquired the rest of the equity.
The amount paid for the 80 per cent stake was not given but an official familiar with the transaction toldThe EastAfrican that it was the highest bid in a competitive process, and that “all the bids were a multiple of the book value of the bank.”
WITH FEWER THAN 500 OIL AND GAS WELLS, EAST AFRICA REGION IS UNDEREXPLORED
When compared with the continent’s west coast, East Africa is underexplored despite the discovery of crude oil and natural gas both onshore and offshore in recent times.
The region has fewer than 500 drilled wells, compared with 20,000 in North and 5,000 in West Africa.
CFC Stanbic Bank blamed the state of affairs on exploration being conducted by small and mid-sized firms, who often sell assets to international oil companies after making commercial discoveries largely due to the high costs involved in production. It costs $25 million to drill an onshore well in Kenya and about $100 million offshore.
Kenya has discovered 600 million barrels of oil onshore, Tanzania about 50 trillion cubic feet of gas and Uganda has 6.5 billion barrels of oil, and 500 billion cubic feet of gas.
Industry players estimate that Kenya and Uganda require over $50 billion for oil production, transport and storage facilities. Tanzania needs over $20 million to build a gas liquefaction plant with an export terminal.
