Dar es Salaam, 6 October 2026 — Bolt Tanzania is strengthening its commitment to safety and accountability across its ride-hailing platform by enhancing driver screening processes and introducing advanced in-app safety features designed to protect both riders and drivers.
Continuous Screening and Compliance
Bolt says driver screening is a continuous process rather than a one-time registration exercise.
Before onboarding, prospective drivers are required to submit comprehensive documentation, including identification documents, valid driving licences, police clearance certificates, LATRA vehicle licences, commercial vehicle registration and insurance.
Beyond the onboarding stage, Bolt maintains ongoing driver and vehicle compliance through regular identity verification. This includes real-time selfie checks designed to prevent account sharing and address potential security concerns.
Additional screening measures include monitoring rider ratings, complaints and safety reports, alongside driver education programmes and safety quizzes aimed at promoting responsible conduct and enhancing safety awareness.
Advanced In-App Safety Features
Bolt’s safety ecosystem includes a range of proactive tools designed to support riders and drivers before, during and after every trip.
Trip Anomaly Tracking: Bolt monitors 100% of trips to detect potential anomalies in real time. When an irregularity is identified, the platform proactively contacts both the driver and passenger to provide immediate support.
SOS / Emergency Assist: Riders and drivers can use the SOS button to request immediate assistance through a callback. In serious situations requiring an ambulance, such as an accident, or security intervention, Bolt coordinates the necessary emergency response.
Trip Sharing: Both riders and drivers can share their live trip status with family members, friends or other trusted contacts. The feature allows another person to monitor the journey, including in situations where a user's phone battery is running low.
Unsafe Area Mapping: Bolt continuously reviews and maps areas identified as unsafe based on confirmed reports from riders and drivers. This enables drivers to decline orders in these areas without negative performance implications, while riders receive proactive safety alerts before confirming a trip.
Restricted Zones: The Bolt app is regularly updated to display restricted zones, helping to minimise trip disruptions and improve journey predictability.
“Safety starts with knowing who is behind the wheel, but it cannot stop there,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa. “Our approach combines rigorous screening, identity verification, continuous monitoring, and robust in-app tools to ensure a secure and reliable experience for everyone on our platform.”
Bolt says the enhanced measures form part of its broader commitment to strengthening safety, accountability and trust across its ride-hailing services in Tanzania.
