DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania; July 21, 2026 – NMB Bank Plc has taken another significant step in implementing its ambitious Medium-Term Strategic Plan 2026–2030 (Agenda 2030) by committing approximately USD 100 million (TZS 224 billion) to a landmark USD 500 million syndicated financing facility arranged by Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking for AngloGold Ashanti's Geita Gold Mine.
The commitment positions NMB as the largest Tanzanian bank participating in the transaction, underscoring the bank's growing financial strength and its ability to mobilise substantial domestic capital for investments that drive Tanzania's long-term economic transformation.
The financing marks another milestone in NMB's journey to become a leading catalyst for national development, while strengthening its position as one of the country's foremost financiers of strategic productive sectors.
Supporting Agenda 2030 and Vision 2050
Mining has been identified as one of the priority sectors under NMB's Agenda 2030, reflecting the industry's critical contribution to economic growth, export earnings and industrial development.
By supporting one of Tanzania's largest and most productive gold mining operations, the bank is helping to strengthen foreign exchange earnings, create employment opportunities, expand local supplier participation and enhance the country's industrial competitiveness.
The investment also aligns closely with the aspirations of Tanzania Development Vision 2050, which seeks to accelerate private sector-led growth, industrialisation, export expansion and increased local participation in strategic industries.
Financing One of Africa's Leading Gold Producers
As one of Tanzania's flagship mining operations and among Africa's leading gold producers, Geita Gold Mine continues to play a vital role in the country's economy.
The syndicated financing facility will support AngloGold Ashanti's continued investment in the mine, helping sustain gold production, exports, local procurement, employment creation and long-term economic value for Tanzania.
NMB: Deploying Capital Where It Matters Most
Commenting on the landmark transaction, NMB Bank Plc Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Ruth Zaipuna, said the financing demonstrates the bank's commitment to directing capital into sectors capable of transforming Tanzania's economy.
"This transaction demonstrates NMB's ability to participate in sophisticated, large-scale financing alongside leading regional and international financial institutions while ensuring Tanzanian capital plays a meaningful role in financing nationally strategic investments. It is Agenda 2030 in action, deploying our balance sheet, expertise and partnerships to accelerate sustainable economic growth and long-term national prosperity."
She added that the investment also supports Tanzania's long-term national development ambitions.
"Tanzania Development Vision 2050 sets out an ambitious pathway towards a more competitive, inclusive and industrialised economy. Financing investments of this scale enables us to strengthen a sector that drives exports, foreign exchange earnings, local enterprise development, employment and sustainable economic transformation."
Strong Commitment to Tanzania's Mining Industry
NMB's participation further strengthens its position as a trusted long-term financial partner to Tanzania's mining sector.
To date, the bank has cumulatively financed the mining industry with approximately TZS 400 billion, supporting responsible mining practices, local supplier development and investment throughout the mining value chain.
The Geita Gold Mine transaction also highlights the increasing capacity of African financial institutions to collaborate on complex syndicated financing arrangements that unlock long-term capital for strategic investments across the continent.
NMB commended Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking for arranging and underwriting the syndicated facility, describing the partnership as a strong example of regional financial collaboration that supports Africa's sustainable economic development agenda.
