Mwanza, Tanzania — Airtel Tanzania has expanded its digital presence in Mwanza following the launch of a new Smart Shop aimed at improving access to communication and financial services across the Lake Zone.
The investment reflects the growing demand for reliable connectivity and digital financial services in one of Tanzania’s fastest-growing commercial regions.
Speaking during the launch event, Ilemela District Commissioner Amir Mkalipa said the new facility highlights the increasing role of technology in driving trade, financial inclusion, and economic growth within Mwanza and the wider Lake Zone.
“Technology is a bridge to development, and communication remains a powerful tool for connecting people, businesses and opportunities,” he said.
Mwanza’s Growing Strategic Importance
The District Commissioner noted that Mwanza continues to strengthen its position as a major commercial hub, supported by thriving sectors such as fishing, agriculture, mining, tourism, trade, and transport — all of which increasingly rely on dependable communication infrastructure and digital solutions.
According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census, Mwanza Region has a population of approximately 3.69 million people and spans 19,592 square kilometres, making it one of Tanzania’s key economic regions.
Mr. Mkalipa emphasized that improved digital services are becoming increasingly essential for residents, particularly small-scale traders, fishermen, farmers, and youth entrepreneurs seeking to grow their businesses through mobile communication and digital financial platforms.
“This is not simply the opening of a shop. It is part of a wider transformation where technology is bringing services closer to citizens and creating new economic opportunities,” he added.
Bringing Services Closer to Customers
The newly launched Airtel Smart Shop will offer a range of services including:
- Airtel Money support services
- SIM card registration
- High-speed internet solutions
- Smartphone access and support services
Speaking at the launch, Airtel Tanzania Lake Zone Marketing Manager Mlaki Mchala said Mwanza remains among the company’s fastest-growing markets due to rising demand for digital communication services.
“We currently serve more than 1.2 million customers in Mwanza Region and work with over 15,000 Airtel Money agents across urban and rural communities,” he said.
Mr. Mchala added that the company continues investing heavily in network infrastructure to improve service reliability and expand connectivity across the region.
“Businesses today depend heavily on communication and digital payments. Our goal is to ensure people remain connected wherever they are,” he said.
Supporting Key Economic Sectors
Airtel’s continued investments are expected to support several critical sectors within the regional economy, including fishing, agriculture, trade, transportation, and small businesses through improved internet connectivity and digital financial services.
Mwanza — popularly known as “Rock City” — has continued attracting investment amid ongoing infrastructure developments such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), expansion of commercial districts, and upgrades at Mwanza Airport.
Industry analysts say that as digital adoption accelerates across Tanzania, investments in telecommunications infrastructure are becoming increasingly important in supporting economic productivity, innovation, and financial inclusion.
Closing the event, Hon. Amir Mkalipa applauded Airtel Tanzania’s continued expansion efforts under its slogan:
“Airtel Kila Kona.”
