Dar es Salaam, March 3, 2025: The Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mr. Kassim Majaliwa, has officially unveiled the digital services offered by the National Bank Commerce (NBC), known as ‘NBC Kiganjani.’ During the launch, he urged organizations and financial institutions across the nation to enhance their electronic service systems by integrating their platforms.

Prime Minister Majaliwa emphasized that the initiative is expected to streamline service delivery for citizens, facilitating the management, sending, and receiving of funds, and ultimately promoting financial inclusion.

Additionally, he directed the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Tanzania (BOT) to spearhead the advocacy for digital payment systems in the provision of various financial services, including the utilization of Point of Sale (POS) machines and payment cards. This initiative aims to significantly stimulate domestic commerce by enabling transactions to be processed quickly, securely, and at a reduced cost.

The launch event took place on Monday (March 3, 2025) in Dar es Salaam, with notable attendees including the Minister of Finance, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba (MP), the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Engineer Maryprisca Mahundi, Kinondoni District Commissioner Mr. Saad Mtambule, and the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Ms. Sauda Msemo.

The Managing Director of NBC, Mr. Theobald Sabi, was present alongside the bank's employees and various stakeholders from the sports sector, notably led by the President of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Mr. Wallace Karia.

According to Prime Minister Majaliwa, this initiative by the bank will enhance government efforts to improve revenue collection via digital platforms, minimize opportunities for tax evasion, and increase transparency within financial systems.

"Moreover, this service will improve access to loans for farmers, traders, and small entrepreneurs through established financial frameworks, which in turn will stimulate economic growth. For businesses and the private sector, NBC Kiganjani will promote domestic commerce by enabling rapid, secure, and affordable payment transactions. This will foster the circulation of money and propel the growth of the private sector, a vital pillar of our economy," he further explained.

In his remarks at the event, Dr. Nchemba highlighted that move by the bank is fundamental to enhancing financial inclusion and nurturing a digital economy. He reaffirmed that the government would continue to collaborate closely with the financial sector to ensure that such services effectively reach a broader segment of the population in a secure manner.

"I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to NBC for its support in various social initiatives, including its notable contributions to improving the NBC Premier League… congratulations," he concluded
Ms. Msemo commended NBC for this initiative and urged financial institutions throughout the country to invest more in digital security systems to safeguard their clients' funds. She emphasized that the current growth in digital services has been accompanied by a rise in digital theft.
Earlier in the event, Mr. Sabi highlighted that the upgraded NBC Kiganjani application and the NBC Lipa Kiganjani service are designed to revolutionize the financial landscape in Tanzania for the benefit of all citizens.
“What is especially exciting is that with the NBC Kiganjani app, customers can open a bank account directly from their mobile phones and begin using it immediately, without the need to visit a physical bank branch. This service streamlines access to financial services and significantly enhances financial inclusion for a greater number of Tanzanians.”
“Moreover, for customers with salary accounts, NBC Kiganjani offers instant loans, ensuring that funds are readily available for emergency needs without delay. This will facilitate quicker financial transactions, thereby stimulating business growth and production,” Mr. Sabi explained. He also noted that clients can use the service to invest in various funds, including UTT and government and private sector securities.
"We take great pride in announcing that the NBC Kiganjani application, along with the other services we are launching today, has been developed by our talented local professionals at NBC, who are young Tanzanians," he concluded.
