TELCOS HAVE REVOLUTIONISED THE WAY WE LIVE, LET’S ALLOW THEM TO THRIVE
By Mandara Ndesanjo, UDSM
The telecommunications sector has revolutionised the way we live our lives today.
Tanzania’s telcos are household names, known for helping us stay connected to our loved ones.
Some of us are becoming accustomed to the other personal services our telcos provide. These companies have gone beyond providing us with the means to call family and friends to transforming into our banks, changing things like how we save and pay our bills.
What some of us don’t yet realise, however, is that these same telcos are having a profound impact on the business environment in Tanzania too.
The same companies that brought us mobile money solutions are finding new and creative ways to support small and medium enterprises, who are the backbone of our economy.

IS BOTSWANA RETAILER CHOPPIES ABOUT TO CHOP ITS EA BUSINESS?
Botswana-based supermarket chain Choppies Enterprises has signalled it could exit the East Africa, a week after announcing plans to leave South Africa.
The multinational retailer, which operates in eight African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania, has recently been characterised by empty shelves in its stores.
Indeed, the retailer listed on the Johannesburg and Botswana stock exchanges saw its shares plunge by more than 60 per cent since last September after announcing a delay in the publication of its financials.
Its shares were suspended on account of the inability by company’s auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers to finalise the 2018 financial statements due to alleged irregularities.
Now, as its woes mount following last week’s announcement of its South African market exit, the firm has called an extraordinary general meeting on September 4, hoping to resolve the squabbles that have brought it to its knees.
MONEY LAUNDERING
The troubles are traced to a dispute between the board led by former Botswana president Festus Mogae and suspended founder and chief executive Ramachandran Ottapathu over the control of the retailer. However, some allege mismanagement and financial impropriety.
During the extraordinary general meeting, shareholders will vote on resolutions contained in legal and forensic reports emanating from investigations into the retailer’s business and allegations of financial misappropriation and money laundering against Mr Ottapathu.

AS DEVELOPMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY CONTINUE, OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM MUST ADAPT ACCORDINGLY
By Ben Ndunguru, CoET UDSM
Educating the next generation is a key part of the country’s development.
Education these days is, however, not just teaching children how to do their sums and spell correctly. It is making sure that they know how to use the technology of today.
It is vital that the children of tomorrow are computer literate and can craft their careers using the technology which is now all around us.
It is therefore great to see that the private sector in the country is helping us drive forward the next generation’s education.
In recent weeks, one of the telcos in Tanzania donated 10 computers with free internet connectivity to a secondary school in Kisutu. It is reported that the school is already running initiatives to enable girls in the school to access Information Communication Technology tools.

PRIVATE COMPANIES IN TANZANIA ARE PAVING THE WAY IN REDUCING THE DIGITAL GENDER GAP AND DRIVING FINANCIAL INCLUSION
Nyamoko Mayagilo
Dar Es Salaam
The GSMA 2019 Mobile Gender Report shows that in sub-Saharan Africa, women are 13 per cent less likely to own a mobile phone and 41 per cent less likely to use mobile internet than men.
This unfortunately has a detrimental impact for women, especially for their financial independence, creating barriers to mobile banking.
In recent weeks, The Gates Foundation called on G7 finance ministers to endorse their new initiative, which is aimed at closing the digital gender gap in Africa.
Commenting on the initiative, Melinda Gates recognised there is a serious risk that digital technology and mobile banking could bypass millions of women in Africa, potentially setting back women’s empowerment.
Turning to Tanzania specifically, we also have a digital gender gap. According to the report, while the gender gap in mobile ownership is 9 per cent, it increases significantly to 41 per cent for mobile internet users.
