TANZANIA BREWERIES LEADS CLEAN-UP INITIATIVE TO PROTECT DAR ES SALAAM’S WATER SYSTEMS

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – March 26, 2026
Tanzania Breweries PLC has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and community well-being through a hands-on clean-up initiative aimed at protecting critical water systems in Dar es Salaam.

Marking this year’s World Water Day, the company brought together city leaders, more than 100 employees, and community stakeholders for a large-scale environmental exercise in Ilala District. The initiative focused on restoring an effluent discharge channel—an essential component in safeguarding surrounding water systems and maintaining urban sanitation.

Public-Private Collaboration for Urban Sustainability

The clean-up exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Mayor of Dar es Salaam City Council, Nurdin Bilal Juma, alongside Ilala Municipal authorities and local councillors. The joint effort highlights the growing importance of partnerships between the private sector and local government in addressing urban environmental challenges.

Led by Neema Temba, Corporate Affairs Director at TBL, the initiative demonstrated how corporate leadership can translate sustainability commitments into tangible action.

Speaking during the exercise, Temba emphasized the company’s long-term approach to water stewardship:

Water is at the centre of our business and our communities. We have a responsibility to protect it—both within our operations and in the environments where we operate. This initiative reflects how we work with partners to deliver practical solutions that support long-term water security.”

She further noted that meaningful environmental impact requires consistent collaboration and on-the-ground action.

Driving Measurable Environmental Impact

TBL supported the initiative with tools and operational resources, enabling participants to achieve visible improvements in sanitation while protecting shared water infrastructure. The effort underscores how corporate-community partnerships can deliver measurable outcomes in environmental protection and public health.

Mayor Juma also highlighted the importance of such collaborations:

Keeping our city clean and protecting our water systems is a shared responsibility. Partnerships like this support our efforts to improve sanitation, safeguard public health, and build a more sustainable city for all residents.”

Scaling Water Stewardship Beyond Clean-Up Activities

Beyond this initiative, TBL continues to invest in long-term water conservation and ecosystem protection projects. In partnership with WWF Tanzania, the company has implemented water access and sustainability initiatives in areas such as Kibaha, including solar-powered water infrastructure that delivers clean and reliable water to local communities.

The partnership also extends to protecting key water sources in Dar es Salaam, including the Msimbazi River, Kizinga River, and Ruvu River—all of which are vital to the city’s long-term water security.

A Broader Commitment to Sustainable Development

While the clean-up activity was local in scale, it reflects a broader strategy by TBL to embed sustainability into its operations and community engagement efforts. The initiative reinforces the role of responsible business practices in addressing environmental challenges, particularly in rapidly growing urban centres.

As Tanzania continues to urbanize, initiatives like this demonstrate how coordinated action between businesses, government, and communities can help safeguard critical natural resources and build healthier, more resilient cities.
