AIRTEL ENHANCES COMMUNICATIONS TO THE FIRE RESCUE FORCE

Airtel Tanzania boosted communication within the Fire and Rescue Force to ease communication has donating 29 handsets which will be used by in calling the 114 emergency numbers to report incidents.

The handsets have been handed over to all Fire and Rescue regions and   customers will be able to call the emergency number free of charge.

Handing over the handsets, the Airtel Tanzania Corporate Communications Director Beatrice Singano Mallya said they recognize the importance of the Fire and Rescue Force and believe that members of the public will now be able to get reliable services from the force.

“Airtel Tanzania now believes that through these handsets members of the public will be able to communicate with the Fire and Rescue Department on time whenever there is an emergency.

DANGOTE CEMENT COMMISSIONS NEW CONGO PLANT

Africa’s largest cement Company, Dangote Cement recently opened its 1.5mtpa capacity cement plant in Mfila, Congo Brazzaville.

The $300 million plant is expected to create about 1000 direct employment opportunities and thousands of several other indirect jobs.

Speaking at the plant’s inauguration President Denis Sassou Nguesso said the investment was an industrial revolution within the Economic Community of the Central African States (CEMAC).

The Congolese President described the opening of the Dangote cement plant as timely and encouraging because it is starting operations at a time the total government revenues have plummeted by 31.3% and revenues from the oil sector have fallen 65.1% since 2015 due to a slide in global crude prices.

The Bank of Tanzania has moved to prevent a possible run on deposits at the sharia-compliant Amana Bank after reports circulated on social media of the financial institution’s imminent closure.

BoT Governor Florens Luoga said that Amana Bank and other lenders were stable and there was no cause for panic over deposits.

He said the bank continues with normal operations, and warned those spreading false information about the future of some banks, including Amana, that stern legal action would be taken against them.

Head of marketing and business Dassu Mussa said Amana Bank has “sufficient liquidity.”

TTCL LAUNCHES THREE DATA, VOICE PRODUCTS

The company, which is set to be rebranded to Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTC) as it moves to ensure profitability starting next year, projects it will generate a profit of between Sh7 billion and Sh8 billion.

Mobile operator, Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL), has launched three data and voice products, through a business transformation project through which it aims to boost its profits.

The company, which is set to be rebranded to Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTC) as it moves to ensure profitability starting next year, projects it will generate a profit of between Sh7 billion and Sh8 billion.

The new products include Waandishi Pack, T.Connect Plus and Bandika Bandua in which customers are able to access the internet at affordable prices.

Speaking during the launch, acting chief Marketing and Sales officer Laibu Leonard said the new products would add bite to the government’s efforts to transform the country into an industrial economy through effective and affordable communication.

Explaining about the Waandishi Pack product, which is tailored for journalists, Mr Leonard said the tariff would enable reporters to stay in touch with newsrooms and move in lockstep with the increasingly digital world.

AfDB LAUNCHES DRIVE TO GENERATE 25M JOBS

Abidjan - The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has launched the Presidential Youth Advisory Group (PYAG) to provide insights and innovative solutions for job creation for Africa’s youth.

This is in line with the bank’s Jobs for Youth in Africa Strategy, according to AfDB’s Group President Akinwumi Adesina.

The initiative aims at creating 25 million jobs and impacting 50 million youth over the next ten years by equipping them with the right skills to get decent and meaningful jobs. It is currently the largest effort going on for youth employment in Africa.

The advisory group, inaugurated on the sidelines of the 6th EU-Africa Business Forum in Abidjan on Monday, will work with the Bank to create jobs for Africa’s youth.

As plans to restructure Tanzania Telecommunication Company Ltd (TTCL) into a communications corporation gather momentum, experts are cautioning the government against giving it preferential treatment.

Works, Communications and Transport Minister, Prof Makame Mbarawa, a week ago tabled a Bill in Parliament to establish the Tanzania Telecommunications Corporation (TTC) in place of TTCL to enhance “safety, security, economic and commercial viability of national telecommunications services and telecommunications infrastructure”.

TTCL, whose roles will be transferred to the new entity, has enjoyed a monopoly in managing the National ICT Broadband Backbone. TTCL collects the levies paid by other companies to connect to the backbone.

“The ICT backbone is government property and there is a special account where the funds go; the benefit we get is a management fee,” said TTCL public relations manager, Tom Mushi.

KENYA OFFERS VISAS ON ARRIVAL TO AFRICANS

Travellers at Kenya's main airport in Nairobi. Kenya will now offer visas to Africans at the port of entry.

Any African travelling to Kenya will now not be required to apply for a visa before leaving for the East African country.

This is after President Uhuru Kenyatta abolished the pre-visa requirement on Tuesday when he took the oath of office for a second and final term.

"Today, I am directing that any African wishing to visit Kenya will be eligible to receive a visa at the port of entry," Mr Kenyatta said.

The move is in line with the Free Movement of Persons and the African Passport policy adopted by the African Union at the 27th ordinary session held in Kigali, Rwanda in July 2016. African states are expected to adopt the African passport and work closely with the AU Commission to facilitate its issuance at the national level based on international, continental and national policy provisions and continental design and specifications.

The passport issuance, however, is yet to take off.

AU has set a 2018 deadline for the removal of visa requirements for all African citizens in all African countries.

TANZANIA'S PLAN TO MERGE PENSION FUNDS KICKS OFF

Tanzania has started the process of merging its seven social security funds into two schemes, with the aim of boosting service delivery.

Through the draft Public Service Social Security Fund Bill of 2017, the government will repeal previous laws under which the seven funds were established.

The Bill, seen by The EastAfrican, is to be presented before parliament early next year.

It proposes that all public servants be absorbed by the Public Service Social Security Scheme to be formed under the Act.

The Act will also establish the Public Service Pension Scheme that will absorb all government employees, repealing the Public Service Retirement Benefit Act.

Public servants currently belong to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

The other existing funds are the PPF Pension Fund, Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF), Local Authorities Pension Fund, Workers Compensation Fund, Government Employees Provident Fund, and the National Health Insurance Fund.

The seven funds have 2.1 million members with total assets of Tsh8.87 trillion ($4.4 billion).

PHASE II DAR ES SALAAM BUS RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT TO GET $159M

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has pledged $159.32 million for the second phase of the Dar es Salaam bus rapid transit system, which is expected to start in June 2018.

The bank said in a statement last week that the Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (Dart) project is aligned with the AfDB’s areas of focus —popularly known as the High-5 — for transforming Africa.

The project, one of its kind in East Africa, is expected to transform mobility and accessibility in Dar es Salaam, a city with over five million people.

The second phase of the project will run on the southeast part of the city along Kilwa road and part of Kawawa road — a total of 19.3km — which is expected to reduce travel time by 15-20 minutes, from the current of 60-90 minutes.

When complete, there will be parking lots at all major entry points to the city — Mwenge in the north, Ubungo in the west and Kimara in the extreme west.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS MARKS START OF THE ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX WITH SPECTACULAR A380 FLY-PAST

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the UAE, once again marked the start of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with a low-level fly-past over Yas Marina Circuit.

The fly-past has become synonymous with the race with the flagship A380 aircraft flying over the iconic circuit at approximately 4.50pm. The A380 was accompanied by the Aermacchi MB-339NAT fast jets of the UAE’s air display team, Al Fursan.

Captain Ali Al Jabri, an Etihad Airways A380 pilot and Vice President Corporate Safety and Quality, embarked on the flight for the seventh year in a row, and was joined by Captain Sulaiman Yaqoobi, Captain Adel Al Zubaidi and Captain Kian Siew Beh in the flight deck.

The bank's Deputy CEO, Peter Matlare, said in Johannesburg, South Africa last week that renaming and rebranding of the bank would be a painstaking process to make sure its operations in several African countries were not to be negatively affected.

"We want to ensure nothing goes wrong...," he told a group of journalists from African countries who toured BAGL headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa last week.

Barclays Africa Group whose operations in Tanzania includes those under Barclays Bank Tanzania and NBC Bank with combined 69 branches and 484,446 customers, is also the largest shareholders of Barclays branded banks in Kenya, Botswana, Uganda, Mozambique, Ghana, Mauritius and Seychelles.

AfDB DISBURSES 360BN/- FOR DAR ES SALAAM BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM SECOND PHASE

Execution of the second phase of Dar es Salaam Bus Rapid Transit System (DART) is scheduled to start next June, thanks to the release of the 159.32 million US dollars (357bn/-) by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

AfDB Project Manager, Jumbe Katala, said in Dar es Salaam last week that the 19.3-kilometre project on the Kilwa Road corridor and part of Kawawa road is expected to reduce congestion during peak hours, with travel time for public transport users reduced to between 15 and 20 minutes, from the current 60 to 90 minutes.

Phase II is part of the six-phase DART system Master Plan for Dar es Salaam city that has been developed by the government of Tanzania and is in line with the AfDB’s Urban Development Strategy (UDS) of 2011. The project’s components include procurement of buses and installation of fare collection system under the private sector funding.

Over 100 articulated trunk buses with 140-passenger capacity each will provide both normal (stopping at all stations) and express (stopping only at connector stations) services. Additionally, a system of 111 feeder buses with capacity of 60 passengers will transport passengers to the trunk system through feeder stations.

PRESIDENT MAGUFULI BURSTS ON VEHICLE IMPORT SCAM

• Issues 7-day ultimatum to TRA, TPA and Police to clear the rot at Dar es Salaam port

President John Magufuli on Sunday issued a seven-day ultimatum to three public institutions to clear uncertainties over the 100 ambulances and police vehicles stranded at the Dar es Salaam port since 2015.

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and the Police Force had tough time yesterday as they came under strong reproof over the rot.

During his impromptu visit to Dar es Salaam Port, the country’s major sea gateway, the Head of State discovered that there were 50 ambulances and 53 police vehicles abandoned at the facility since2015 and 2016, respectively.

In yet another shocking revelation, it was uncovered that some importers had abandoned their vehicles at the port for over ten years, impeding the port’s capacity to store cargo. The situation compelled President Magufuli to demand detailed explanations behind the vehicles’ overstay, which is against the law.

President Magufuli directed the authorities to embark on legal and transparent procedures to remove from the port all cars that have overstayed. “I want an immediate removal of all cars that have been here for longer time than what the law demands... if they are to be put under government ownership let them be. We can’t continue keeping vehicles of unidentified owners for ten years,” he directed.

CHINESE SHIP LEAVES AFTER SERVING 6,400 PATIENTS IN DAR

Over 6,400 Dar es Salaam residents have benefited from the weeklong free medical consultation and treatment by the Chinese Naval ship that left the city yesterday.

The Chinese Naval Hospital Ship, Peace Ark, docked at the Dar es Salaam port on November 19, 2017, attracting thousands of city residents who thronged the ship for medical services. President John Magufuli who visited the ship yesterday learnt that some 10,000 people turned up for the services during the past one week.

“This shows that there is high demand of medical services, I therefore advise our Chinese friends to come and invest in the health sector in Tanzania,” President Magufuli appealed. Upon hearing the ship arrival, especially Dar es Salaam residents turned up in big numbers for the Chinese medical services, at times sparking chaos in their struggles to get into the ship.

The vessel had all medical check-up facilities and drugs, 115 doctors, 266 nurses and other staff as well as 300 patient beds. President Magufuli was informed that during their one-week medical mission, the crew attended to 6,421 patients, with 31 of them operated.

TANZANIA PORTS AUTHORITY BRINGS SERVICES CLOSER TO BURUNDI

The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has brought its services closer to Burundi by taking several measures, including opening its office in Bujumbura to simplify clearance of cargo destined for the central African country.

The office opened in Bujumbura will also reduce costs that businesspersons have been incurring to travel to Dar es Salaam to inquire about their cargo.

TPA Director General, Engineer Deusdedit Kakoko recently travelled to Burundi where he met government officials, including President Pierre Nkurunziza and head of revenue body Mr Audace Niyonzima.

Other measures taken by TPA to attract cargo from Burundi, include extending cargo clearance grace period for major importers from 14 to 30 days. He also said TPA has opened an account with CRDB bank in Bunjumbura to facilitate bank transactions.

Also in the list of measures include availing a piece of land to keep containerised cargo destined for Burundi at Ruvu in Coast region. According to Engineer Kakoko, a plot measuring 250 width and 500 length would be handed over to Burundi through its embassy in Tanzania.

ACCESS BANK MARKS A DECADE OF SUCCESS

Access Bank Tanzania has marked a decade of operation in the country by reaching the unbanked and undeserved population thus contributing to financial inclusion.

AccessBank Tanzania’s Chairman of the Board of Directors, Bernd Zattler said, going from establishment of operations ten years ago to scale-up calling for improvement and change because another 10 more years require greater accomplishments ahead.”

The journey began with one branch and a few staff to now 13 branches across Tanzania, while loans to SMEs hovering over 5.5bn/-. “We have grown, however, when we talk about growth, I don’t mean in terms of space or profit.

“People ask us how we maintained or stayed motivated through the last 10 years in a competitive industry that is embodied with change and innovation,” the chairman said. He said the bank over the years have a point to prove.

BancABC, ambayo ni sehemu ya Atlas Mara, imeshirikiana na Hospitali ya Taifa ya Muhimbili ili kutoa huduma ya bima ya afya itakayofaidisha watoto 100 ambao ni yatima na wanaoishi katika mazingira magumu kupitia mradi mpya wa afya wa Muhimbili uliozinduliwa leo.

Akizindua mpango huo wa Afya wa Muhimbili Waziri wa Afya, Maendeleo ya Jamii, Jinsia, Wazee na Watoto, Ummy Mwalimu, aliishukuru BancABC kwa kushirikiana na Hospitali ya Muhimbili katika suala hilo la kutoa huduma ya bima ya afya kwa watoto.

Alisema mradi huo wa Muhimbili kushirikiana na BancABC unaendea sambamba kabisa na malengo ya serikali iliyojiwekea katika kuhakikisha kuwa jamii inapata huduma ya Afya kwa uhakika katika Hospitali ya Taifa Muhimbili kwani watoto ndio moja ya makundi ambayo huathirika sana wasipopatiwa huduma za Afya za uhakika.

“Natoa wito kwa wazazi watumie fursa hii iliyotolewa na BancABC kwa ushirikiano na Hospitali ya Taifa ya Muhimbili kwa kuwafungulia watoto wao akaunti BancABC ili kuhakikisha watoto wao wanapata huduma kwa uhakika muda wowote bila ya ulazima wa kuwa na fedha tasilimu pale mtoto anapougua,” alisema.

Health and Gender Minister Ummy Mwalimu stresses a point to BancABC Head of Retail Banking Joyce Malai during an event to hand over 100 health insurance cards to orphans and vulnerable children over the weekend. The programme is a partnership between the Muhimbili National Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine and BancABC Tanzania.

BancABC, which is part of Atlas Mara, has embarked on an initiative to support Muhimbili Emergency Department in providing health insurance to at least 100 orphans’ kids and most vulnerable children.

Launching the initiative in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Ummy Mwalimu lauded BancABC for partnering with Muhimbili in providing insurance for children.

She said this was in line with the government’s objectives in ensuring people get reliable services at Muhimbili National Hospital and children are among the most vulnerable groups.

“I call on parents to use this opportunity that has been provided by BancABC and Muhimbili and rush to BancABC and open accounts so as to ensure our children receive reliable services at the hospital at any given time without having to pay cash,” she said.

NEW ETIHAD AIRWAYS APPOINTMENT CONFIRMS COMMITMENT TO TANZANIA

Ailende ‘Allen’ Okoromu.

Dar es Salaam – Etihad Airways has appointed Ailende ‘Allen’ Okoromu (pictured) as its new Country Manager overseeing operations in Tanzania.

Reporting to John Friel, Etihad Airways General Manager for the South and East Africa region, Mr Okoromu will lead the Abu Dhabi-based airline’s commercial strategy in Tanzania and will be responsible for further strengthening Etihad Airways’ partnerships with travel trade partners and corporate customers.

He moves to the new role in Dar es Salaam from his previous position as Etihad Airways Sales Manager based in Nigeria, where he was responsible for the ongoing development of the airline’s commercial operations across the Sub-Sahara Africa and Indian Ocean regions.

Prior to joining Etihad Airways in 2012, he worked in a number of senior sales related roles for Nigerian-based Aviareps Nigeria Limited and Virgin Nigeria Airways where he developed an in-depth understanding of the business and leisure travel markets across Central Africa.

John Friel said: “We are committed to the important Tanzanian market and I am delighted that Ailende will be leading our team in growing our business there.

His extensive commercial experience and successful track record in the African aviation industry will be invaluable as he continues to develop awareness of Etihad Airways, making him the ideal candidate for this important position.”

ISO which stands for International Standards Organization sets out the criteria for a quality management system that is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement of processes and operations.

Speaking during the ISO certificate handover at the bank’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Mr. Frederick Kanga, Head of Human Resources said that the ISO certification is another great milestone for the bank, which was recently named Tanzania’s Best Retail Bank by Banker Africa East Africa.

“Attaining this certification is another step in the right direction for our bank to showcase its commitment to provide quality service to its customers. We aim to sustain and improve market faith, sustain customer confidence, improve service levels, reduce transactional time, differentiate from other banks, increase efficiency, experience higher profitability and increased market share,” further said Mr. Fredrick Kanga.
