ZANTEL Tanzania has today rolled out its high speed fourth-generation
(4G) data connectivity as well as the mobile Islamic banking, as the mobile
network provider continues to extend its better services to customers.
In enhancing the mobile Islamic banking services, Zantel has partnered with the People’s Bank
of Zanzibar (PBZ) to ensure that customers get access to all of their banking
needs via mobile phone.
Launching the event in Pemba on Thursday, Zanzibar’s
deputy Minister of Construction,
Communication and Transportation, Hon. Mohamed
Ahmada said that the new services from Zantel have come at the right
time for the Pemba community and that his ministry is working closely with
other mobile phone providers to improve the quality of services in Zanzibar.
“The introduction of
4G network and the mobile Islamic banking is what our people in Pemba have been
waiting for. We are glad that Zantel recognized this need and worked on it fast
enough” he said.
On his part, Zantel’s
Chief Executive Officer, Benoit Janin said the launch of the new services in Pemba come at a time when Zantel is at the
peak of improving the quality of its services in the country in order to meet
the ever changing demands of its customers.
According to him, the mobile
Islamic banking appeals more to the large Muslim community in Tanzania which is
increasingly practicing a more ‘Sharia’ compliant way of life.
“Mobile Islamic banking financial service is
more than just a product. Our value proposition is to share the values of
Islam, instill and inspire them towards a wholesome Muslim lifestyle in every
way,” the Zantel CEO said.

He added that the use of mobile banking provides an added dimension to the future of banking communications with advantages such as; - time effectiveness, user-friendliness and security.
According to the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), mobile money
subscribers transacted Sh988.9 billion during the second half of last year as
telecom firms become an increasingly important payment avenue.
Explaining further about the 4G network launch in Pemba, Janin assured Zantel customers that the company has been in the competition for a while and that is why they are investing a lot in data, quality and new technologies.
“We will continue to expand
our 4G network to other parts of the country and provide much more innovative
services to our beloved customers and this launch is just the beginning of much
more to come” he said.
In Zanzibar, Zantel is the market leader,
with 80 per cent of the market share and boasts of being the first mobile
network provider to introduce the Mobile Islamic banking in Tanzania.
Recently Zantel partnered with the National Muslim Council
well known as BAKWATA in its Kiswahili acronym to launch ‘Zantel Madrasa’ the
service which would facilitate Muslim teachings to its customers through the
interactive voice response and SMS.
