Addressing reporters in the city, the Special Zone Deputy Police Commander Hezron Gyimbi, said the total sum was collected from August 12 to August 18.
“For six days traffic officers in Dar es Salaam Special Zone were able to collect a total of 616,860,000/- from 20,562 offences committed by drivers and motorcycle riders who for some reason decided to break traffic road safety regulations,” explained the Special Zone acting boss.
In another development, Commander Gyimbi said 15 motorcycle riders were arrested and taken to court after violating road safety regulations.
The ‘bodaboda’ riders were arrested after they were found carrying more than one passenger in a manner known as ‘mshkaki’.
Some of them were found to be riding without a helmet.
Mr Gyimbi further urged passengers and motorcycle riders to comply with traffic regulations for their own safety.
He, however, insisted that their goal was not to make profit by collecting huge amounts of money, but to make sure road users obeyed traffic rules and regulations all the time.
