The branch was officially launched over the weekend by the Nyamagana District Commissioner (DC), Baraka Konisaga at the event which was also coloured by women entrepreneurs who conducted exhibitions on various items they produce and sell.
Speaking during the event, Konisaga said that the government values partnership with all financial institutions that support women to enable them grow their business and achieve their dreams towards better life and poverty reduction.
Financial services accessibility has been a challenge that has a huge contribution to the levels of poverty experienced in Tanzania and Africa in general, he said.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager – Credit of Equity Bank Mr David Mukaru said Mwanza Branch was officially opened on November 2012 and up to date it has more than 23,000 active customers of which almost 2,000 of them have loans and 57 per cent are women entrepreneurs.
He said Mwanza branch is also supported with more than 74 Agency located around Mwanza Region and few in neighbouring Region like Mara and Shinyanga adding that women who form majority of customers in Mwanza branch have been enjoying the services especially the Fanikisha Plus products.
He said the surveys were conducted in various parts of Tanzania and women from all walks of life were involved and key aspects that were gathered from the research portrayed that among other issues women require inclusive financial services that includes Trainings, Markets, Savings, Loans and Insurance, among others.
He said that over the period, Equity Bank has perfected the art of appraising business clients the systems used are able to measure the client’s ability to pay and come up with the best fit loan for business growth and development.
