Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) plans to spend Sh3.4 billion to provide 20 wards in Tanzania Mainland with internet connectivity and telecommunications by the end of next month.
TTCL chief commercial officer in Zanzibar Hussein Nguvu said the areas would be among 33 wards to be covered in the second phase of a project funded by a $6 million (Sh9.8 billion) grant from the Universal Communication Services Access Fund (UCSAF).
He was speaking on behalf of TTCL CEO Kamugisha Kazaura during the commissioning of a communications tower in Nachingwea, Lindi Region.
Mr Nguvu said the project would take telecommunications and internet services to areas that were previously cut off from the rest of the country, adding that this would stimulate business and other economic activities among local populations.
“Our aim is to cover the entire the country. We believe that through UCSAF we will attain our goal of bringing modern means of communications to within easy reach of people living in rural areas. Affordable communications and internet services are our priority.”
Nachingwea MP Mathias Chikawe thanked TTCL for installing the communication mast at Kiegei Village, and urged people in the locality and surrounding areas to take advantage of improved communications to make their lives better.
“This is a great opportunity for you to grow economically. Use TTCL mobile phone and internet services in your daily economic activities to improve your lives,” said Mr Chikawe, who is also the Minister for Home Affairs.
