Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam City Council is facing a shortfall of a little over Sh200 billion for completion of the project to construct a new terminal for upcountry buses at Mbezi Luis in the outskirts of the city.
This was revealed to reporters yesterday Dar es Salaam City mayor Didas Masaburi who the money would go towards putting a modern infrastructure to suit the requirement of a modern upcountry bus terminal.
“The TIB Development Bank has agreed to lend the city council Sh30 billion for the project of constructing infrastructure to compliment the new bus terminal, but it isn’t enough,” said Mr Masaburi.
He also said the greatest challenge facing the projects for upgrading Dar City to match international urban standards funding.
“We need private sector participation to because there aren’t enough public funds earmarked for the projects on updating the city master plan,” he said.
He further said that another problem was that the city council did not have autonomy to implement projects on updating Dar.
Last week the minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Co-operatives told stakeholders at the Ubungo Bus Terminal that the government was preparing projects for relocating the facility for upcountry buses to Mbezi Luis and Goba.
Delivering the keynote address for the event, the permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (Local Governments and Regional Administration), Mr Jumanne Sagini, said that launched last year in New York, the Metropolitan Lab on strategic planning and management of cities is seeking solutions for the problems of overburdened resources.
The Metropolitan Lab which is being held in Dar is the first in Africa since its inception in New York.
