BARCLAYS KENYA PROFITS SUGGEST WIDER GAINS IN BANKING SECTOR

Barclays Bank of Kenya posted a 17.7% rise in after-tax profits in 2018 on the strength of non-funded income.

The local subsidiary of Absa Group Limited told investors last week that it earned KSh7.416bn in 2018, a steady rise from KSh6.296bn posted in 2017.
  • The bank’s non-funded income rose by 14.7%, while customer deposits increased to KSh207.4bn in what CEO/managing director Jeremy Awori called “the fastest growth in a decade on some key performance metrics”.
The lender’s total assets also grew to KSh325bn from KSh271.77bn, while its loan book grew by 5% to close the year at KSh177.35bn.
  • The bank also declared a final dividend of 90 cents per share.
Traditional profit avenues vanish

In what has clearly been a tougher credit market for Kenyan lenders, Barclays’ net interest income rose by a paltry 0.8% in 2018.

The lender’s response to the rate cap included launching Timiza, a mobile lending app, and hiring a chief data officer.
  • The bank processed 1.6 million loans worth KSh10bn through the mobile app in 2018, which also grew its customer base by three million.
Barclays, which has been in Kenya for more than a century, is currently the fourth largest bank in Kenya by asset base. It is in the process of rebranding to Absa Group Limited, a process that is also impacting its profits due to the one-off costs of rebranding.
Banking sector rebounding

Two other lenders, KCB Group and Stanbic Holdings, also recently announced growth in net profits.
  • KCB posed a 21.8% increase in profit.
  • Stanbic posted a 45.5% increase in profits to KSh6.27bn.
Other lenders are expected to follow suit in the next week as they race to meet the 31 March deadline to post their full-year results.

LAND ACQUISITION IN TANZANIA: WHAT FOREIGN INVESTORS SHOULD KNOW

The strength of a land title in Tanzania may define the validity and security of an entire project, with significant implications on its bankability as a whole. Large areas of land in Tanzania are unsurveyed village land and foreign entities may want to access such land when investing in the agricultural sector. Various construction projects may also require access to village land for hydroelectric power projects, telecommunication tower installations or wind farms. The investment opportunities are undeniable but investors should be aware of the legal technicalities involved. This article addresses whether a foreign company can access village land in Tanzania and what the available options are.

In order to provide some context to this briefing note, it is important to define some of the basic terminology that is used.

For the purposes of land management in Tanzania, land is categorised into the following:
  • "general land", which is managed by the Commissioner for Lands. The certificate of a Granted Right of Occupancy ("GRO") can be granted in respect of this land. Further to that, a Derivative Right to occupy and use land may be created out of the GRO;
  • "village land", which is the land within the area declared to be a village and is managed by the Village Council in which a Customary Right of Occupancy ("CRO") may be issued. The GRO or a Derivative Right to occupy and use land may only be granted over village land after conversion of the village land to general land; and
  • "reserved land", which is land that is set aside under various laws for various purposes, including but not limited to forests, national parks, highways and hazardous land
Land titles that can be issued in Tanzania

The following are the various land titles available in Tanzania:
  • GRO – means a right to occupy and use land under a long term lease of either 33, 66 or 99 years which is granted by the President in general land or reserved land for a period up to but not exceeding 99 years. A GRO is one of the highest forms of land tenure in Tanzania and effectively constitutes a 99 year lease from the Government.
  • CRO – means a right to occupy and use land under a long term lease of either 33, 66 or 99 years which is granted by a village council.
  • Derivative Right – means the right to occupy and use land created out of a GRO and includes a lease, a sub-lease, a licence, a usufructuary right and any interest analogous to those interests. A Derivative Right can be granted for a period of 10 days less than the period for which the GRO has been granted.

CBA OWNERS OKAY MERGER WITH NIC

Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) is on course to merge with NIC Group after the majority of its shareholders approved the share swap deal that was proposed in January.

CBA directors said yesterday that as at end of last Monday, 29 out of 34 shareholders with 98.15 per cent stake of the issued and fully paid up share capital had accepted the deal.

“As a result of the share exchange transaction, it is proposed that NIC Group will acquire sole control of CBA and its subsidiaries,” CBA said in a statement published in the daily newspapers.

The merger, expected to be executed through a share swap, is the first major merger deal in a sector that has continued to witness consolidation in the recent past.

Successful conclusion of the merger could see the combined bank become the third biggest in Kenya by total assets, and the second biggest bank in Kenya by customer deposits, according to South Africa rating agency, Global Credit Ratings (GCR).

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 12 March 2019 – Consumers in Tanzania will now be able to send money to each other domestically without paying transaction fees, following the launch of Visa on Mobile, a service provided by Visa and 15 Tanzanian banks. The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of digital payments and follows the successful launch of the service in Kenya and Nigeria.

To use the service, a bank customer simply downloads their bank’s mobile app, looks for Visa on the application and pays for goods and services either by scanning the QR code or by using a USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) code at a merchant location. The service is free and secured by Visa, the world’s leading payment network.

CRDB bank and NMB bank will have Visa on Mobile enabled on their banking apps to deliver this service to consumers and merchants starting today. The other 13 banks will be implementing this service in the coming weeks.

INTRODUCING UBER LITE: LIGHT, SIMPLE & RELIABLE

Uber Lite is a reimagined app that saves space, works in limited network and on any Android phone
Dar es Salaam, March 19, 2019 - Uber, today, has announced the launch of Uber Lite: The new, lighter way to Uber. Uber Lite is a simpler version of the Uber app which works on any android phone while saving storage space and data. Plus, it’s easy to learn and use, and it’s designed to work even in low connectivity areas.

Alon Lits, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa explains, “Every day, hundreds of thousands of Tanzanians rely on Uber for mobility and work, and we understand that a one-size-fits-all app doesn’t work for the diversity of network conditions, devices, and rider needs across the country. After extensive research, we redesigned the entire user experience to be simpler based on what riders told us they needed and the result was Uber Lite.”

Uber Lite’s new interface was designed to make booking rides quicker and lighter in low connectivity (2G), on basic Android phones, and for people with limited data plans.

Here are the key product features:
  • Light on your phone: Uber Lite is less than 5MB to download (that’s equivalent to just 3 selfies). A smaller app frees up space for actual selfies and other apps. And, with a 300-millisecond response time (literally the blink of the eye), the booking process is fast even in low connectivity.
  • Guided Pickups: Uber Lite guides users through the request experience by detecting their current location, so minimal typing is required. If it can’t detect your location because of GPS or network issues, it guides you to choose popular landmarks nearby such as the Old State House (which is how most people in Tanzania communicate their location).
  • Tap Over Type: Uber Lite makes picking your destination as easy as a tap of a button. Instead of typing where you are, you can choose a nearby point of interest. Additionally, the app stores the city’s top places so that even when you are offline, no network is needed for them to appear. And the more you use Uber Lite, the smarter the app gets. It learns where you go most often, and surfaces those options first. This feature is particularly convenient for people with phones with smaller screens.
  • Maps On Demand: To keep the app light and fast, maps in Uber Lite are not loaded by default but are available with a tap when you need them.
Uber Lite retains the core functionality of the rider app, has in-app support and includes critical safety features, such as Trusted Contacts; a feature that allows riders to share their trips with about five friends and family and driver profiles, allowing riders to identify their driver and their vehicles before they get in.

The Uber LITE app is now available in Tanzania and Uganda following the app’s launch in Kenya and South Africa in January this year.

Here’s how it works:

STANCHART BRANCH CLOSURE SIGNALS BANKING JOB LOSSES

Standard Chartered Bank Kenya (StanChart) will shut down its Malindi branch at the end of April.

The lender announced this in a notice that did not provide reasons for the closure, but which signals an era of shifting towards digital banking as lenders transfer their services online amid falling customer traffic at branches.

“This is to inform you that we will close Malindi branch effective May 1, 2019. We will retain our ATM services within Malindi for 24-hour express services and convenience,” said StanChart.

The lender advised its Coast-based clients to access services from its two branches in the region including Maritime House branch on Moi Avenue and Treasury Square branch on Nkrumah Road in Mombasa.

The lender did not respond to Business Daily queries on how many employees the Malindi branch closure will affect.

Towards the end of August 2017, StanChart announced it would shut down four of its branches in Bungoma, Kisii, Kitengela and Warwick (Nairobi).

“All the affected staff will be deployed to branches and other roles in the bank,” said the bank then.

Former chief executive Lamin Manjang had linked earlier closures to reduced customer traffic into its outlets as clients shift to digital platforms to carry out transactions.

“We continuously undertake a branch rationalisation programme in line with our digital by design strategy, which is geared towards developing market-leading online and mobile channels that deliver easy, convenient banking to all our clients.
