Dar es Salaam. You can now make payments to over 600 government agencies through UBA Bank Tanzania, thanks to the lender’s integration into the Government e-Payment Gateway (GePG).
UBA Bank said recently that its system has been successfully integrated into the GePG, allowing Tanzanians to effectively make all government payments - tax and non-tax revenue - at any of UBA Tanzania’s branches.
Specifically, UBA Tanzania was one of the eight banks in the country that were certified by Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to start collecting government tax revenue through the GePG Platform from July 1, 2020 as the Authority transits from the use of Taxbank to GePG.
The UBA Tanzania’s Head of Public Sector, Mr Dominick Timothy, said the integration of the bank’s system into the GePG was one of the ways that the pan-African lender was supporting the government’s development initiatives.
Mr. Timothy noted that following the successful completion of the GePG integration for tax and non tax government revenue payment at all our branches, the bank will also be integrating the platform into its multiple digital banking channels like mobile app, internet banking, Leo chatbot, USSD Magic Banking and Webcollect with a view to improving the ease with which members of the public can pay their tax and non-tax bills through UBA from the convenience of their homes and offices.
“It has always been our aspiration to support government initiatives of which efficient means of revenue collection through the unique digital expertise of the bank is a key component. We are glad and grateful to TRA and Ministry of Finance for providing us this opportunity to be of service to the nation” he said.

TELCOS HAVE REVOLUTIONIZED TANZANIAN'S ACCESS TO THE INTERNET
In recent years, the world has witnessed a growth in technology, particularly when it comes to mobile internet.
In many ways, it can be argued that mobile internet has become an indispensable force which has had several significant benefits.
In the world of business, for example, mobile internet has enabled people to work collaboratively and creatively, even when colleagues are separated from one another.
Similarly, mobile internet has created a way of staying connected to friends and family. Many of us now keep in touch with loved ones via our mobile or computer screen in ways that were simply not as easy, even a few years ago.
It is little surprise, therefore, that in a number of countries people are now spending more time online than ever before.
Tanzania is, of course, no exception. Between 2013 and 2019 internet penetration across the country doubled, reaching 46 per cent in 2019.
Part of this growth can be attributed to the country’s telecom operators, such as Tigo Tanzania.

Dkt.

UBER CASH LAUNCHED IN TANZANIA
Cashless payment convenience with Uber, facilitated by Flutterwave
23 June, Dar es Salaam - With a significant number of businesses opting for contactless operations across Tanzania in response to the COVID-19 crisis, Uber is introducing Uber Cash to further promote cashless transactions across all Uber’s products, including Uber Eats. Uber Cash is facilitated by Flutterwave, an online payment solution, to ensure the easiest and most reliable payment options are made available for locals.
Riders can now prepay for their upcoming trips with Uber Cash, creating a stress-free way to travel, further adding to the convenience this payment method offers. Digital payments help ensure the well-being of both the rider and driver by limiting unnecessary physical contact and it is the encouraged method of payment should travel be necessary.
While existing payment options will still be available including cash (for rides only), debit card and gift cards, this new feature offers a seamless way to make and further control payment on Uber. This method creates a payment account dedicated to both apps that can be preloaded with any amount, to be used on upcoming trips and orders. The account can be topped-up via the user's Ride account and used as and when needed on both Uber and Uber Eats apps, allowing the user to control the amount spent on the specific app, further helping them control their budget.

Barrick pays first tranche of the USD 300 million settlement
The Tanzanian government has recently received USD 100 million from Barrick Gold Corporation as the first tranche payment of the USD 300 million cash component of the recent restructuring. It is reported that this initial payment will be followed with five equal USD 40 million annual payments.
The other news related to the above is that the Tanzanian government has issued an export permit to allow the export of the 277 mineral concentrates containers held in Dar es Salaam since 2017.
The above appears to be the implementation of the deal that was entered into between the Tanzanian government and Barrick Gold Corporation earlier this year. As a result of this deal a joint venture company called Twiga Minerals Corporation was created in which the government holds a 16% free carried interest. This is in line with the amended Mining Act that requires the government to be given not less than 16% free carried interest in every company that holds a mining licence or a special mining licence.

EQUITY APPLIES BRAKES ON EXPANSION AFTER MARA FLOP

| Dr James Mwangi, Equity Group Chief Executive Officer. |
Chief executive James Mwangi told The EastAfrican the lender which is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) will now focus on “vertical” growth by consolidating and strengthening its business operations in the existing six markets, with the aim of transforming into a Ksh1 trillion ($10 billion) bank with 100 million customers.
“Our expansion is in two ways; horizontal and vertical. We have opted for vertical expansion where you deepen and then scale up your market share in the countries you are operating in,” said Mwangi.
“So, meanwhile what will we do because we already have six banks? We will focus on those banks, deepen them and make them stronger. We are also targeting to increase the market share in the countries we are in. The DRC that transaction is complete and we will be doubling our market share and then using the new capability to really try to grow significantly.”

ECOBANK TRANSNATIONAL INCORPORATED HOLDS ITS 32ND AGM AND SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE RESOLUTIONS
Lagos, June 30, 2020 – Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (“ETI”), the parent of the Ecobank Group, the leading pan-African bank with banking operations in 33 countries, concluded its 32nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) & Extraordinary General Meeting in Lagos, Nigeria, today. For the first time in the history of ETI and in line with preventive measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, attendance at the General Meetings was mainly by proxies in accordance with the Articles of Association of the Company.
Ecobank Group Chairman Emmanuel Ikazoboh said: “We are in the final lap of our five-year ‘Roadmap to Leadership’, having laid and achieved much improved business and operational foundations, leadership in digital products with scalability, strong corporate governance and continued expense discipline. We continue to focus on making substantial strides towards ensuring a return on equity above the cost of capital across the Group despite the challenging economic conditions especially with the COVID-19, whilst also maintaining our commitment to driving economic development and financial integration across Africa. This was my last AGM, as I have now completed my tenure as director and Chairman. As I retire, it has been a privilege for me to have served this great institution and I am particularly proud of what we have achieved. I am further assured and confident that my able successor as Chairman, Mr. Alain Nkontchou will continue to lead the Board in our journey to leadership. The world has its eyes on Africa, and we are positioning our Bank in a way that continues to ensure its commitment to, and development of the continent. I will remain a strong ambassador of this great institution and its ideals”.
