FAST IN EAST AFRICA: FACILITATING ACCESS TO FINANCE IN TANZANIA

FAST, in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, is laying the groundwork for its second Tanzanian FAST Financial Fair (FFF) for agricultural SMEs and Financial Service Providers. The precursor to this event was a financial literacy training workshop, held for 20 agricultural SMEs which greatly contribued to the strength financial management knowledge of the participants. This session was particularly engaging due to the customization of the FAST Financial Literacy Toolbox (FTBLX), which were translated to Swahili and adapted with local examples, including an addition of a debt management module.

The FFF consists of one-on-one meetings between Financial Service Providers and local SMEs, closing a finance gap which is particularly problematic for agricultural SMEs in the country due a lack of opportunity in investment and financial management education.

21,322 JOBS WERE CUT IN JANUARY DUE TO CRASHING OIL PRICES

Phillip Chambers, a driller for Raven Drilling, talks on a phone while drilling for oil in the Bakken shale formation outside Watford City, North Dakota.

The January report on job cuts from staffing firm Challenger, Gray, & Christmas showed that oil prices are really starting to take their toll on the labor market.
From Challenger's release on Thursday morning:
Job cut announcements surged to their highest level in nearly two years, as falling oil prices prompted cost-cutting efforts in energy and related industries. In all, U.S.-based employers announced plans to shed 53,041 jobs from their payrolls to start 2015; with 40 percent of those directly related to oil prices.
Of the 53,041 job cuts announced in January, 21,322 were directly attributed to the recent and sharp decline in oil prices. Most of these cuts occurred in the energy industry, where employers announced a total of 20,193 layoffs (19,722 of which were directly attributed to oil prices). The January total is 42 percent higher than the 14,262 job cuts announced by the energy industry in all of 2014.
In January, oil prices were cited as the #1 reason for job cuts, outpacing restructuring-related job cuts.

OIL SERVICES COMPANY WEATHERFORD IS SLASHING 8,000 JOBS

There are more oil job cuts.
On Wednesday night, oil services company Weatherford announced it would cut 5,000 jobs.
On its earnings conference call on Thursday morning, the company upped this total to 8,000, according to headlines from Bloomberg.
Bloomberg notes that this reduction is equal to about 14% of the company's workforce.
In a statement on Wednesday, Weatherford said:
Due to the quickly changing market conditions, we are aligning and reducing our cost as well as organizational structures to match the new environment. As a result, we will have a leaner structure and a tighter organization. We have commenced a reduction-in-force exercise targeting 5,000 positions, of which more than 85% are located in the Western Hemisphere. The headcount reduction is expected to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2015, resulting in expected annualized savings of over $350 million. Weatherford is also offering a Voluntary Separation Opportunity Program to eligible employees as part of the recognized need to reduce our employee workforce. The focus is on both operating and support positions.

CRUDE OIL IS RALLYING

Crude is rallying again.
After falling as much as 9% on Wednesday, the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up as much as 7% on Thursday morning to move back to near $52 a barrel after touching $48 a barrel yesterday.
Near 2:45 pm ET on Thursday, crude had pared some of these gains but was still up better than 4% to trade near $50.50 a barrel.
Crude prices have been extremely volatile in recent days, rallying more than 20% from Thursday to Tuesday before a huge sell off on Wednesday.

MEET THE RUSSIAN OLIGARCHS WHO OWN THE WEST'S MOST FAMOUS BRANDS

Russia's wealth disparity is off the charts. Just over 100 billionaires hold a third of the country's wealth
That's largely down to Russia's chaotic 1990s. Enterprising and ruthless men (and they are practically all men) took hold of huge chunks of the former Soviet Union's rapidly privatised industries, or made millions bringing in highly sought-after exports from the west.
More recently, they haven't limited their interests to Russia. In the past 15 years, a handful of oligarchs have been snapping up companies in the West, too.
Some of the oligarchs no longer call Russia home: They have moved to the UK and US, or other post-Soviet countries. But they've all gained major interests in Europe and North America, controlling flashy organisations like football clubs, and huge, under-the-public-radar industrial groups.

Alisher Usmanov - Arsenal

Usmanov is Russia's richest man, with most of his wealth coming from mining interests. He also owns Mail.ru, Russia's largest internet firm, and its second-largest mobile network operator.
Usmanov’s holding company, Red & White, owns about 30% of Arsenal’s shares. He splits that with Farhad Moshiri, another steel magnate.
That share has climbed from 14.65% when the holding company first bought in, slowly accelerating. He’s made comments in the past that indicate he’d like an even bigger stake. For now, US billionaire Stan Kroenke is the majority shareholder.

LOW OIL PRICES ARE WEAKENING VENEZUELA, RUSSIA AND IRAN'S INTERNATIONAL POWER

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Russia's President Vladimir Putin and former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad pose for a picture at the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) at the Kremlin in Moscow, July 1, 2013.

Three major countries that have been a thorn in the side of the United States are going to see diminishing influence over the coming years because of declining oil prices.

That's the verdict of Bank of America economists who looked into the international political effects of the price slump. Here's what they had to say (emphasis ours).

BILL GATES - CAN MOBILE BANKING REVOLUTIONIZE THE LIVES OF THE POOR?

We're excited to have Bill Gates as our guest editor in February. Throughout the month, Bill will be sharing his vision of how technology will revolutionize life for the world's poor by 2030 by narrating episodes of the Big Future, our animated explainer series. In addition, we'll be publishing a series of features exploring the improvements in banking, health, farming, and education that will enable that revolution. And while the topics reflect the bets Bill and his wife Melinda are making with their foundation, they've asked us for nothing less than fully independent Vergejournalism, which we're more than happy to deliver. Turns out Bill Gates is a pretty confident guy.

IN THE VILLAGE OF Sori along the banks of Kenya’s Lake Victoria, fishing has long been the lynchpin of the local economy. Jobs here are largely divided by gender: men catch the fish, and the women process the meat, take it to market, and handle finances.

As detailed in a 2012 study from the SIT Graduate Institute, residents of Sori traditionally kept their money at home. Theft was a constant concern, and many of the women interviewed reported their husbands misappropriating their savings. For many, traditional banks were either too far away, or demanded minimum deposits the villagers could not afford.

APPLE JUST POSTED THE BEST QUARTER IN CORPORATE HISTORY

Apple posted the biggest profit in corporate history last quarter after selling a record number of iPhones.

Apple (AAPL, Tech30) sold 74.5 million iPhones in the last three months. That helped Apple's profit soar more than 37% to $18 billion. That's larger than Gazprom's $16.2 billion profit during the first quarter of 2011 -- the previous profit record posted by a corporation.

Apple also posted a stunning $74.6 billion in sales, up nearly 30% from the same period last year. That's not close to a global corporate record, but it's the best quarterly revenue Apple ever posted.

"Interest in Apple products is at an all time high ... shattering our high expectations," said CEO Tim Cook on a conference call with analysts. "This volume is hard to comprehend."
