PRESIDENT SAMIA DRIVES AGRICULTURAL MARKET AGENDA AS KILOMBERO’S K4 BOOSTS TANZANIA’S SUGAR PRODUCTION

Dodoma, August 8, 2026 – President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expanding domestic and international markets for agricultural, livestock and fisheries products, emphasising the importance of creating greater opportunities for trade and investment to enable producers to access reliable markets and increase productivity.

President Samia made the remarks on August 8, 2026, during the National Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition held at the John Malecela Grounds in Nzuguni, Dodoma.

She said the Government would continue creating an enabling environment for both local and international investors while strengthening market access for Tanzanian producers.

Against this backdrop, Kilombero Sugar’s K4 Factory has emerged as a major investment in Tanzania’s sugar industry, significantly increasing domestic production capacity and supporting the country’s ambition to achieve greater sugar self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on imports.

Speaking to the media during the Nane Nane Exhibition, Kilombero Sugar’s Corporate Affairs and Stakeholder Relations Manager, Mr. Victor Byemelwa, said the Company was proud of the K4 investment, describing it as a major milestone in its growth journey.

He said the investment is expected to deliver a significant boost to sugar production while creating greater opportunities across the sugarcane value chain.

According to Mr. Byemelwa, the impact of K4 extends beyond sugar production, with the investment also having the potential to increase electricity generation from sugarcane by-products, contributing to Tanzania’s energy supply and strengthening Kilombero Sugar’s contribution to the national grid.

“The K4 investment represents a major step forward in strengthening Tanzania’s domestic sugar production. Beyond increasing sugar output, it is creating greater opportunities for sugarcane farmers, employment, businesses and communities across the wider value chain,” said Mr. Byemelwa.

He called on Tanzanians, particularly farmers, to take advantage of the opportunities created by the investment by actively participating in sugarcane farming and related value-chain activities.

He noted that the continued growth of the sugar industry could increase household incomes, create employment and stimulate economic activity in communities surrounding sugar-producing areas.

EXPANDING PRODUCTION AND SUPPORTING FARMERS

Meanwhile, Kilombero Sugar’s Corporate Affairs and Communications Director, Mr. Derick Stanley, said the Company remains focused on expanding sugar production to meet growing domestic demand and contribute to the implementation of Tanzania’s Development Vision 2050.

Mr. Stanley said Kilombero Sugar expects to work closely with outgrower farmers who are projected to supply approximately 1.5 million tonnes of sugarcane, with the crop expected to generate more than TZS 150 billion in income for farmers.

The development is expected to strengthen household incomes and stimulate economic activity within sugar-producing communities.

“We are continuing to invest in expanding production capacity and building the long-term resilience of Tanzania’s sugar industry. These investments are not only about producing more sugar; they are about strengthening the entire value chain, creating greater opportunities for farmers and supporting Tanzania’s industrial development,” said Mr. Stanley.

KILOMBERO SUGAR AT NANE NANE

Speaking about Kilombero Sugar’s participation in the Nane Nane Exhibition in Dodoma, the Company’s Commercial Director, Mr. Fimbo Butala, said the Company was using the platform to bring its products and services closer to consumers and stakeholders.

He said the exhibition also provides an opportunity to share information on sugar production, sugarcane farming and Kilombero Sugar’s contribution to Tanzania’s agricultural and industrial development.

According to Mr. Butala, Nane Nane provides an important platform for the Company to engage directly with farmers, customers and other agricultural stakeholders, understand their priorities and strengthen partnerships aimed at increasing productivity and creating greater value across the agricultural value chain.

K4 INVESTMENT AND TANZANIA’S SUGAR FUTURE

Kilombero Sugar’s K4 investment comes at a time when Tanzania is placing greater emphasis on strengthening domestic production, expanding agricultural value chains and creating reliable markets for local producers.

By increasing sugar production capacity, supporting outgrower farmers, creating employment and potentially increasing power generation from sugarcane by-products, the investment is positioned to contribute to several areas of Tanzania’s economic development.

The K4 project therefore represents more than an expansion of a sugar factory. It is part of the broader effort to build a more productive agricultural sector, strengthen industrialisation and create sustainable economic opportunities for farmers, businesses and communities.

As Tanzania advances its Development Vision 2050, investments that connect agriculture, industry, energy and markets will remain important in driving inclusive economic growth and strengthening the country’s productive capacity.
