Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 13 April 2026 — Absa Bank Tanzania has reinforced its commitment to community wellbeing with the handover of a fully refurbished Mother and Children Ward at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital.

The initiative, delivered through the bank’s staff-led “Adopt a Ward” programme, reflects a growing shift in how corporate institutions are engaging with communities—not just through funding, but through active employee participation and purpose-driven impact.

A Practical Investment in Healthcare

The refurbishment has significantly improved the ward’s infrastructure, creating a safer, cleaner, and more dignified environment for mothers, children, and healthcare workers.

Key upgrades include:

  • Roofing and ceiling improvements
  • Toilet wall tiling and plumbing works
  • Window repairs and external PVC enhancements
  • Electrical installations
  • Aluminium door fittings
  • Installation of toilet seats and sinks
  • Complete repainting of the ward

These enhancements collectively contribute to a more conducive care environment—an essential factor in maternal and child health outcomes.

Where Purpose Meets People

Speaking during the handover, Patrick Foya, Director of Human Capital & Culture at Absa Bank Tanzania, emphasized the deeper meaning behind the initiative.

“At Absa, we believe that ‘Your story matters’, and today we are reminded that the stories of mothers, children, families and healthcare workers matter deeply.”

He noted that the project is a clear expression of Absa’s purpose:
“Empowering Africa’s tomorrow, together… one story at a time.”

More importantly, it highlights a distinctive internal culture—one where employees take the lead in identifying community needs, mobilizing resources, and partnering with the institution to deliver lasting change.

A Model of Staff-Led Impact

What sets the “Adopt a Ward” initiative apart is its bottom-up approach. Rather than being purely top-down CSR, Absa employees actively:

  • Identify critical community needs
  • Mobilize internal support
  • Collaborate with the bank to execute impactful projects

This model not only amplifies impact but also strengthens employee engagement and ownership in social transformation.

Strengthening Communities Through Collaboration

The project aligns with Absa’s broader citizenship and sustainability agenda, which positions the bank as an active force for good in society.

By improving a critical healthcare facility, Absa is:

  • Supporting frontline healthcare workers
  • Enhancing patient experience for mothers and children
  • Contributing to better public health outcomes
  • Reinforcing the value of collective community action

A Bigger Picture: Banking Beyond Finance

As part of Absa Group Limited, Absa Bank Tanzania continues to demonstrate that modern banking goes beyond financial services. It is increasingly about creating shared value, where institutions play a meaningful role in shaping resilient and inclusive communities.

With a 21-year legacy in Tanzania, the bank’s approach reflects a long-term commitment to local solutions for local challenges—bringing its brand promise, “Your story matters,” to life in tangible ways.

Final Thought

In a time when healthcare systems across Africa continue to face pressure, initiatives like this highlight the power of partnerships between institutions and communities.

Absa Bank Tanzania’s “Adopt a Ward” programme is more than a refurbishment project—it is a reminder that real impact begins when people take ownership of change, together.
