Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 23 February 2026 – Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable water stewardship and responsible resource management by contributing TZS 50 million to support the Tanzania Water Service Excellence Awards.

The awards are being held in Arusha on 23 February 2026 as part of the National Conference for Boards of Directors of Water Supply and Sanitation Authorities (WSSAs), convened by the Ministry of Water from 23–25 February 2026 at the Ngurudoto Hotel.

The high-level conference is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants and focuses on strengthening leadership, governance, and oversight capacity among board members responsible for water service provision across Tanzania.

Strengthening Governance and Sustainable Development

Speaking ahead of the event, Simon Shayo, Vice President for Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Africa at AngloGold Ashanti, said the company’s support aligns with its long-standing commitment to sustainable development and responsible resource stewardship.

Water is a strategic economic resource that underpins industrial productivity, operational continuity, and long-term investment sustainability. In Tanzania, responsible water governance directly affects business resilience and community prosperity. Our support for the Tanzania Water Service Excellence Awards reflects our belief that strengthening leadership, efficiency, and accountability in water service delivery is essential to safeguarding both economic growth and national development,” Shayo said.

Expanding Water Access in Geita

GGML has consistently invested in water-related initiatives in the Geita Region. Among its key contributions is support for the Geita Water Project, which has delivered potable water to more than 300,000 residents while strengthening supply infrastructure and expanding service coverage to surrounding communities.

Dr. Kiva Mvungi, Senior Manager for Health, Safety and Environment at GGML, emphasized that sustainable water management remains central to the company’s operational and community strategies.

As a mining company, responsible water stewardship is central to how we operate. Beyond compliance, we are committed to supporting systems that improve long-term water access and reliability for communities. Partnerships that strengthen governance and service delivery contribute directly to sustainable outcomes,” he said.

Advancing Tanzania’s Water Agenda

Water access remains a critical pillar of Tanzania’s social and economic development agenda. By supporting platforms that promote performance standards and celebrate service excellence, GGML aims to contribute meaningfully to national efforts to ensure safe, reliable, and sustainable water services for all Tanzanians.

The company’s participation in the Tanzania Water Service Excellence Awards underscores the growing role of private sector partnerships in strengthening governance, improving accountability, and advancing sustainable development across the country.
