Tanzania, 6 August 2025 — In a landmark move toward a modern transport ecosystem, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has officially approved the operation of ride-hailing services on the islands. This regulatory shift has paved the way for Bolt, a leading global ride-hailing platform, to begin operations in Unguja, marking a new era of tech-driven urban mobility in the archipelago.
The approval not only reflects the government’s progressive stance on innovation but also signals a deliberate push to boost economic activity and increase access to safe, affordable transportation in Zanzibar communities.
A Welcome Brand for Locals and Tourists
Bolt, which operates in over 50 countries and 600 cities globally, sees Zanzibar as a strategic market — particularly due to the island’s status as a globally renowned tourist destination.
“Being present in Zanzibar means offering a mobility brand that many foreigners already know and trust from their home countries,” said the company in a statement.
The availability of a globally recognized ride-hailing platform is expected to provide both residents and visitors with greater convenience, enhanced safety, and digital access to mobility — all essential elements in a rapidly evolving tourism economy.
Socio-Economic Impact
Bolt’s entry is more than just a tech milestone; it is set to create platform-based entrepreneurship opportunities for local drivers, support job creation, and enhance connectivity across the islands.
“We applaud the Government’s bold and progressive decision to embrace ride-hailing as a tool for economic stimulation and inclusive growth,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager of Bolt Tanzania.
He also acknowledged the collaborative work with regulators: “Our policy engagement with ZARTASA has borne fruit and paved the way for a collaborative regulatory framework that supports innovation, job creation, and improved mobility for all.”
Record Tourism, Modern Solutions
The launch comes at a time when Zanzibar’s tourism sector is witnessing record-breaking growth. According to the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, July 2025 saw over 106,000 international visitors, the highest monthly figure ever recorded. Since January, nearly half a million tourists have visited the islands.
With this surge, the need for efficient, safe, and scalable transport options has never been more critical. Bolt’s presence promises to reinforce transport resilience, especially during peak tourism seasons — supporting not only hospitality and retail sectors but also enhancing the overall experience for tourists.
A Step Toward Inclusive Transport Transformation
The approval and introduction of ride-hailing services reflect Zanzibar’s commitment to modern, regulated, and inclusive transport development. With continued public-private partnerships, the archipelago is poised to become a benchmark for smart urban mobility in East Africa.
