Kikwete made the remark during the ‘Night of Giving’ fundraising dinner organized by JKCI where the bank handed over a dummy cheque worth 1bn/= to the institute following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties a few days back.
As part of the four-year MoU, the lender will provide 250m/- each year as financial assistance for child patients with heart complications undertaking treatment at JKCI.
“I take this opportunity to commend NMB Bank for supporting this noble cause that will help to put a smile on over 1,500 children diagnosed with heart complications. The Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan currently foots 70 percent of all the bills, the commitment by NMB and other partners will ensure that under-privileged children are now served fully,” he stressed.
He added, “To date, 1,500 children have been diagnosed with heart complications at JKCI. Out of that number, 500 children need immediate attention. If their treatment fund is not raised, their lives are in danger,” he stressed.
Kikwete commended the Sixth Phase Government for committing 70 percent of the funding required for cardiac treatment adding that the Government’s efforts will help give a lease of life to under-privileged children.
During the event, NMB Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Ruth Zaipuna noted that the bank’s efforts seek to compliment Government’s efforts by earmarking 1bn/- to finance cardiac treatment reiterating the bank’s commitment to continue supporting development of the health sector.
“As bank, we understand that cardiac treatment is so expensive so many people are not in position to meet such costs. It is on such a background that we decided to partner with JKCI to fill the missing financial gap and help to put a smile in parents whose children have been diagnosed with heart complications,” he said.
Zaipuna during the event urged other corporate companies to support the noble cause urging that consorted efforts will help JKCI to realize its goals and ambitions.
Earlier the JKCI Executive Director, Dr. Peter Kisenge during the event noted that unlike the past, over 97 percent of the heart complications are now treated internally.
“Out of every 100 children born, 1 or 2 children are diagnosed with heart complications. We do over 743 open-heart surgeries per annum. There is on institution in East and Central Africa with such a volume,” he stressed.
Dr. Kisenge during the event noted that his institute has undertaken over 4,839 heart operations since its inception in 2015.
“At the moment, we have been able to attend over 608,000 patients to date. Apparently, we now undertake 97 percent of the cardiac complex procedures. This means that we now have the capacity to handle 97 percent of the heart complications internally," he added.
He noted that his institute has embarked on cardiac outreach program dubbed “Samia Outreach Program” that seeks to take services to grassroots levels adding that 17,000 people have so far been reached in 17 regions across the country.
On his part, the JKCK Board Trustee Abdulmarik Mollel during the event noted that over 2.7bn/- was raised during the ‘Night of Giving’ fundraising gala event.
