Developed in partnership with Mastercard, the first-ever QR Pay by Link with Click to Pay service was officially launched on Saturday in Zanzibar, where the government said it will significantly enhance travel trade and boost tourism receipts.
Among other merits, the NMB QR Pay by Link solution allows customers and non-customers of the bank from anywhere in the world to make payments using their cards by scanning NMB QR codes.
"This is a monumental and historic advancement in the realm of digital payments, benefiting both Tanzanians and tourists visiting Zanzibar and the entire country," noted Mr Filbert Mponzi, NMB’s Chief of Retail Banking, in his remarks.
"It is also a significant step in advancing the national payment system, allowing for innovative digital payment solutions for business owners while providing customers with secure QR Codes for their transactions," he added.
According to him, the innovation will also expand payment options for local businesses that are not integrated into official payment systems, such as POS machines, allowing them to use the 'NMB QR Pay by Link' as an alternative to traditional POS solutions.
Mr Mponzi stated that the groundbreaking payment method will enhance the efforts of both the Union and Zanzibar governments to position Tanzania as a more attractive tourist destination by enabling visitors to transact easily while in the country.
"With this launch, we expect it to contribute to the growth of the tourism sector here in Zanzibar and Tanzania as a whole, thereby easing payment challenges for businesses and tourists in the country,” he explained, noting that the Spice Islands hosted 700,000 visitors last year.
Mr Mponzi stated that over 100 businesses in Zanzibar have already adopted the 'NMB QR Pay by Link' service and have recognized its significant business potential and economic benefits.
In his speech at the event, Dr Aboud Suleiman Jumbe, Principal Secretary in Zanzibar’s Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, noted that by August, over two million tourists had visited Tanzania, generating US$ 3 million in foreign exchange for the country.
Dr Aboud stated that investments and financial solutions like 'NMB QR Pay by Link' will enhance the appeal of destination Tanzania to international visitors, ultimately boosting tourism revenues and incomes in the whole travel trade value chain.
He praised NMB and Mastercard for their innovative partnership, stating that this novel solution will not only transform the local payment landscape but also position Zanzibar and the entire country as a model for introducing unique services to tourists.
"The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar will maintain close collaboration with NMB Bank and other national development stakeholders to strengthen and enhance the tourism sector, fostering its growth and potential,” Dr Aboud emphasized.
"The launch of this service will create new opportunities in our economy that has experienced significant growth over the past four years, due to the strong support from financial institutions,” he added.
During the launching ceremony, Mastercard recognized NMB as the first bank in the world to offer the QR Pay by Link with Click to Pay service, honouring it with a special award that was presented by Mr Shehryar Bahk Ali, Senior Vice President for East Africa and the Indian Ocean.
In his remarks before handling over the award to Mr Mponzi on behalf of NMB Bank, Mr Ali stated that the new payment solution reflects NMB's forward-thinking business approach, which positions it as a global leader in digital payments.
"We are proud to partner with NMB on this innovative initiative, a first of its kind globally, which is a significant achievement for both the country and the people of Tanzania," he remarked, noting that NMB has initiated a revolution that will drive remarkable economic changes worldwide.
