The president held discussions with the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce on December 5 to chart his economic plans for the next five years.

DESTINATION TANZANIA SHOULD NOW CAPITALIZE ON SPORTS AND MEDICAL TOURISM

Godwin Semunyu is a Communication Specialist based in Dar es Salaam. He can be reached through email - gsemunyu@epicpr.co.tz

By Godwin Semunyu

Tanzania records an estimated 1.5 million tourists annually, accounting for 17 percent of the GDP, more than 2 million employments - and is the leading sector in foreign exchange earnings garnering over $2 billion annually (about Sh4.6 trillion).

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), International tourist arrivals to Africa grow at around 5% per annum with close to 1.4 billion visitors. Africa's top tourism destinations are Morocco, with around 11 million arriva
ls and South Africa, with around 10 million tourist arrivals, annually.

If you look closely at the figures, you will notice that destination Tanzania, blessed with unraveled natural attractions from the breathtaking coastline, national parks to Africa's highest peak in Mount Kilimanjaro, ought to have more significant numbers than what is currently garnered.

It is time to repackage our tourists’ offerings by adding more value and create a new competitive edge. You will agree that Morocco has nothing astronomical to get ten times the tourists than what Tanzania is getting. There are some other areas that we can tap to add value to our tourists' packages: Sports and medical tourism come to mind.

FOR TANZANIA TO CONTINUE GROWING ITS ECONOMY, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THE INVESTMENT CLIMATE IS AS ATTRACTIVE AS POSSIBLE

Tanzania's President Dr John Magufuli speaking to representatives of the business community in Tanzania in June 2019.

As another year draws to a close, it is only natural to reflect on the past year, while looking ahead to what 2021 may bring.

A notable moment from 2020 for Tanzania was undoubtedly the country reaching its ambitious target of becoming a lower-middle-income economy, five years ahead of schedule this summer.

The World Bank updates the classifications each year in July, and according to the organisation Tanzania was among only seven countries that moved up a category this year.

Economists praised this moment as “a step forward” in the national development process.

As many know, since 2016, the Tanzanian government has embarked on an ambitious programme to transform the country into a middle-income economy by 2025.

Looking ahead to 2021, it is worth remembering that gaining lower-middle-income status is only one part of Tanzania’s broader development goals. The Tanzania Development Vision 2025 is much broader and envisions the country as being a middle-income country by 2025, characterised by high-quality livelihoods, a well-educated society and a strong economy with sustainable growth.
