Tigo Pesa and Google team up to enable Tanzanians to pay for all online content or applications available on the Google Play Store
Dar es Salaam, 18th October 2018 - Have you ever wanted to purchase music, movies, apps or reading material online on the Google Play Store but were unable to do so because you don’t own a bank debit or credit card?
Tanzania’s leading digital lifestyle company Tigo has worked with Google since June to offer customers the option to pay for online content available on the Google Play Store through Tigo Pesa. Powered by Tigo’s partner Bango, this service enables over 7 million customers using the mobile financial service Tigo Pesa to pay for any content or application available on the Google Play Store using their Tigo Pesa mobile money wallets.
‘Tigo customers using Android smartphones or tablets can now make one-off, in-app or subscription payments for content on Play Store in a simple and convenient way from anywhere in the country through their active Tigo Pesa wallets. This gives our customers the added convenience that enables them to download and enjoy online content from Google Play Store as they seamless enjoy our transformational digital lifestyle services through Tanzania’s biggest and fastest 4.5G network,’ Tigo’s Chief Officer for Mobile Financial Services, Hussein Sayed said in Dar es Salaam today.
This solution seamlessly combines Google Play with the Tigo Pesa purchase experience that Tigo customers are used to when paying for goods and services. Customers go through the same steps they would normally do to purchase content on the Play Store, and under the payment options choose Tigo Pesa. They then follow a few simple steps to link their Google profile to their Tigo Pesa account, create and enter a new 6-digit passphrase which will be used for all Play Store purchases.

This will give millions of Tanzanians who do not have credit cards access to the full depth of content on Google Play.”
