Dar es Salaam, October 2, 2018. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Dar Marathon, the charity event that has been experiencing record-breaking registrations every year.
Various community service projects have been executed over the past nine years through the funds raised and include planting over 26,000 trees, provision of clean drinking water in schools, construction of a pediatric oncology ward at the Muhimbili Hospital and development of an entrepreneurship centre at the University of Dar es Salaam.
This year’s Rotary Dar Marathon is being held with the objective of raising funds for CCBRT for the construction of a specialized clinic that will enable high-quality services for paying patients which in turn will help provide for highly subsidized services at the CCBRT disability hospital.
The Rotary Dar Marathon is an initiative of the 8 Rotary Clubs in Dar es Salaam and has been generously supported by key sponsors like Bank M and Pepsi.
Speaking at the event, the Chair of the Board of the Rotary Dar Marathon, Mrs Sharmila Bhatt said - “We believe the strategic partnership we had with Bank M has developed the right conditions that have led to other exemplary sponsors coming on board”.
She further elaborated that “this year, Pepsi has gone one step further to promote sports in Tanzania by offering full sponsorship for the top Tanzanian male and female performers in the 42.2km full marathon event, to participate in the Beirut Marathon.
This is a major development for the Rotary Dar Marathon being recognized as a qualifying event for Tanzanian athletes to receive sponsorship for international marathon events”. She also mentioned and thanked some of the key sponsors of the Rotary Dar Marathon including Ashton Media, Toyota, ALAF, Zoom Tanzania, Resolution Insurance, Clouds Media Group, Azam Media, Plasco Limited, Insignia, Knight Support, Ashers and Soft Tech.
Mrs Bhatt also used the opportunity to introduce the Rotary Dar Marathon brand ambassador for 2018, Tanzania’s top female artist Vanessa Mdee alias Vee- Money who will be involved in the races as well as help in creating awareness about the event.
Speaking to journalists, Vanessa shared her appreciation for the nomination and promised to support the cause. “I’m grateful for this great opportunity of being recognized as someone who can drive this cause to the public. I promise to use my influence to attract a lot more participants, knowing that through every extra participant coming on board, the event and funds raised will go a long way in helping others”.
On her part, The Rotary Dar Marathon Chair for 2018, Rotarian Catherinerose Barretto assured Tanzanians that everything is on course as planned, adding that Oct 14, 2018, will be a memorable sporting and family event day in Tanzania’s history. According to her, the 10th edition of the Rotary Dar Marathon expects to attract more than 16,000 participants.
The event will include a 5km family walk, a 9km walk, a half marathon 21.1km run, a full marathon of the 42.2km run, cycling as well as lots of other fun activities.
She said the marathon would have several runners from all over Africa. “We expect to have participants from Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, South Africa and Ethiopia.”
Again, Ms Barretto reminded that the event’s theme continues to be “Healing Lives, Transforming Communities” and it is in its third year of raising funds to support the Comprehensive Community-Based Rehabilitation (CCBRT) social enterprise project.
According to CCBRT’s Chief of Operations, Ms Brenda Msangi, the new clinic will help the hospital to enhance its quality services as they hope to serve a larger number of Tanzanians in the coming years.
“We’re extremely grateful that The Rotary Dar Marathon has always been thinking about our hospital in their endeavours, and now the entire Tanzanian community is benefitting from their generosity,” she said.
