24 University students from the University of Dar es Salaam receive full scholarships to study.
Speaking during the announcement, which took place at the Barclays Head office, Barclays Managing Director, Abdi Mohamed said “As a business, we focus much of our efforts on education and skills. As an employer, we are well aware that Tanzania needs a thriving private sector that is investing in productive capacity. youth unemployment is a significant national challenge, we aim to play a role in providing young people with the tools and readiness needed to find meaningful employment and business opportunities. The availability of skills in any country is critical to drive economic growth and development”.
Barclays Bank Tanzania’s shared growth strategy is committed to enhance socio-economic growth in Africa. As a continent we can only be successful if we connect positively and create value with the society in which we operate. Shared growth means having a positive impact on society while delivering shareholder value.
He continued, “Our #BaloziMwanafunzi programme is one example aimed at upskilling young people education and skills. This scholarship programme is in partnership with the University of Dar es Salaam – Tanzania’s oldest and largest university. This year alone, 24 undergraduate students have been offered full scholarships,This initiative will help us build a real connection with the students, customers and clients, and other important stakeholders. It is our belief that the programme will have positive implications for our own talent pipeline”
Abdi concluded, “As a leading bank in Tanzania, and as part of a leading financial services group in Africa, we will continue to use our substantial resources and expertise to develop solutions to the various challenges facing Tanzania, as well as build partnerships to create a more prosperous Tanzania for the next generation”.
