TTCL ROLLS OUT 4G NETWORK IN ARUSHA CITY

THE State owned, Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) has rolled out the high speed fourth-generation data connectivity in Arusha City, further complementing the 134 kilometres of the National Fibre Optic Cable Network circumnavigating the country.

The TTCL 4G launch, graced by the Regional Commissioner, Mr Mrisho Gambo, comes at a time when the Arusha- based Headquarters for the Tanzania National Parks is also finalising process to link all its data and communication system to the Tanzania Telecommunications Company’s data network which is essentially the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB).

“While this development is positive and targets to push the country’s economic wheels even further, there are challenges of some saboteurs who vandalise TTCL infrastructure; as the head of the security committee in the region, let me assure the management that we shall deal with such culprits,” said Mr Gambo.

The Regional Commissioner stated that his office will soon be linked with TTCL services in a bid to support the public company and that, soon all other government and public offices will be required to join the bandwagon.

Arusha becomes the 9th precinct to be linked to the TTCL high speed network, already the service has been rolled out in Coastal Region, Dodoma, Mbeya, Mwanza, Morogoro, Tanga, Dar-essalaam City as well as Unguja and Pemba Islands of Zanzibar, according to the Company’s Acting Executive Officer, Mr Waziri Kindamba.

The Long-Term Evolution (LTE) fourth generation connectivity, which was launched here by TTCL, is yet another indication that the public company is steering away from its former Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) mode of connectivity, choosing to join the widespread and popular Global System for Mobiles (GSM) onto which the LTE is based.

The Long-Term Evolution which TTCL is currently adopting in its countrywide voice and data connectivity is standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones and data terminals, based on the GSM/ EDGE and UMTS/HSPA technologies used by almost all cellular phone companies and handsets as well as internet modems and wireless hubs.

In Arusha, all parts of the central business district here is already linked to the 4G service as efforts are going on to expand the network into the remaining six rural districts as well. The city has a population of 500,000 residents while the entire region may soon record a population of 2 million.
