ECOBANK TANZANIA REFURBISHES CHILDREN’S WARD AT LIGULA REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL IN MTWARA


Mtwara, November 14th, 2015: As part of the celebrations in marking the Ecobank Day which is a community action day during which the bank’s staff across Africa are encouraged to devote the day to serving communities in which the group operates, Ecobank Tanzania has celebrated its day with the immediate renovation of the children’s ward at Ligula hospital in Mtwara.

Speaking during the main event at Ligula regional referral hospital in Mtwara, Ecobank Tanzania’s Managing Director Mr. Enoch Osei-Safo said the bank has been celebrating the Ecobank day in the country for the past three years and that it is an initiative that aims to celebrate and honour the community that surrounds the bank.

“We recognize that the future for any nation lies in the hands of the children. By offering all the necessary support including good health, a child will rise to become stronger and more resilient, ready to face the world.

He said that the theme for this year’s Ecobank day is “Every African Child deserves a better future.”

“We would like to celebrate the children in Mtwara by improving the environment at the children’s ward here at Ligula regional hospital. We have dedicated the time and resources to provide a clean and safe environment for both the health providers and the children”.

Mr. Enoch Osei-Safo also added that the Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS) Policy of Ecobank Tanzania has been directed into supporting a range of community development areas including health and education with health taking 60 per cent of their annual CSR projects.

Delivering her speech, Mtwara’s assistant regional commissioner Ms. Fatma Ally who was also the Chief Guest of the special event applauded Ecobank Tanzania for their heart-felt contribution in refurbishing the children’s ward and spending time with children admitted in the ward.

She urged the bank to expand its philanthropic scope into Education, Environment, Agriculture and others issues that affect the society directly and assured the bank that the government will continue to be persistent in improving health services in various hospitals, Education and environmental issues across the region.

“We are determined and will continue to work hand in hand with various sectors both private and public to make sure that we improve the life of an African child”.

On his part, the assistant Chief medical officer of Ligula hospital Mr. Joseph Mweru commended the bank for their contribution saying that the renovation will help to reduce the death of infant babies who die due to lack of clean environment and fresh air.

Statistics show that infant deaths in Mtwara in the year 2014 were 385 increasing from 240 from the previous year which are majorly caused due to lack of clean air, severe malaria and infections.
