MWANZA, MAY 21st, 2015: Tigo Tanzania General Manager, Diego Gutierrez, has shared the company’s investment commitment to the lake zone regions where the company intends to invest some $ 6.3 million in network expansion and improvement this year.
Addressing Mwanza based journalists today, Gutierrez said Tigo will build 63 additional new sites including seven 4G LTE sites. The lake zone comprises eight regions of Mwanza, Shinyanga, Mara, Kigoma, Kagera, Tabora, Geita and Simiyu, he said.
The 4G LTE network means faster speeds to surf and download content from the Internet and make Skype calls. It also significantly enhances the customer experience for video streaming or conferencing. The technology is about 5 times faster than the 3G technology currently available in the market.
“This year we plan to set up 63 new sites to ensure that residents of every village in the eight regions gets connected to our services. At an average cost of US $ 100,000 per site, this translates to investing over US $ 6.3 million in the zone this year,” Gutierrez said.
“It means giving more people new social and economic opportunities, integrating them to the global economy through internet access and in the process, enabling them to embrace a digital lifestyle,” he added.
The lake zone has, according to the General Manager, been a major beneficiary of Tigo’s sponsorships and corporate responsibility initiatives which seek to directly turn around the social welfare of the people in the areas of education, health, environment, entrepreneurship, job creation, arts and sports.
In the past two years, Tigo has been investing an average of US $ 2 million per week on its infrastructure countrywide. This investment has been put into expanding its networks by building new sites, even in the remotest villages, upgrading its network to 3G to enable people access data, training their workforce and giving back to communities through their corporate responsibility programmes.
In the past twelve months, according to Gutierrez, Tigo has pioneered a number of services. These include being the first company to launch international money transfer with currency conversion, introduction of free access to Facebook in Kiswahili and entering partnerships with other operators to enable its customers to send or receive money across other networks in the country.
He said other achievements are giving Tigo customers an opportunity to deposit and withdraw money from bank accounts through their mobile phones, giving customers quarterly profit earnings from balances maintained in their wallets, Tigo Music that gives customers access to an unlimited world of music through Deezer and 4G technology launched last month.
