The Association of Local Authorities of Tanzania (ALAT), will for the first time present Awards to outstanding Mayors and Chairpersons of Urban and District Councils, in this year’s 31st annual meeting.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Dar es Salaam Mayor, Dr Didas Massaburi, said the event, which will be held from 8th to 9th this month in the city, will see ALAT marking 30 years anniversary since it was started.
The guest of honour at the event is expected to be President Jakaya Kikwete, who will also hand out the awards to the outstanding Mayors and Chairpersons. The award is titled Mayor’s Award.
He said among achievements that will be celebrated as ALAT marks 30 years will include adoption of the decentralisation by devolution policy with brought decision making powers to the people, improving governance and service delivery within communities.
The Dar es Salaam mayor, who was last year appointed board member of the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), said about 46 districts and urban councils are participating in the competition.
These include Arusha, Mwanza, Bukoba, Sumbawanga municipality, Chamwino, Shinyanga, Arusha city , Singida municipality, Ushetu, Morogoro municipality and Mtwara district council.
Dr Masaburi said the categories for the Mayor’s Award are Infrastructure projects, Local Economic Development, Reforms within the councils, Financial management viability and Good Governance.
The awards will include cash money ranging from 5m/-, computers, solar systems and a Tractor for the overall winner which will be used for issues relating to the councils.
The public can vote for their favourite mayor or chairperson from the list of nominees found on the ALAT website: www.alat.or.tz/ awards and send the number of the preferred council through an sms to 15440.
“We will also be getting the winner among those that will be voting and the winner will receive an all inclusive trip to the Africities summit in South Africa sometime this year.
He said this is a unique opportunity where people can directly nominate and vote for outstanding Mayors and Chairpersons of Urban and District Councils.
“The Mayors Awards Scheme initiative is aimed at transforming the way Mayors and Chairpersons carry out their responsibilities of leading their councils to discharge their mandates of delivering services and promoting local economic development and welfare of the people,” he added.
He added that about 550 participants will be expected to participate in this years, 31st annual meeting. NMB Bank which has been sponsoring the ALAT annual events will this year provide 200m/-, out of which 150m/- for preparations and 50m/- for purchasing the tractor that will go to the overall winner in the Mayor’s Award.
NMB’s Chief Finance Officer (CEO), Mr Waziri Barnabas, noted that in collaboration with ALAT, the bank will provide priority in different areas of development in the country, noting that it already has 170 branches and more than 600 ATMs across the country.
