Arusha. Rural Electricity Agency (Rea) has issued Sh4.6 billion to 20 contractors tasked with distribution of power to rural areas not connected to the National Grid.
Rea Board chairman Edmund Mkwawa said, the 20 contractors were picked out of 55 which had applied for the task of distributing solar and wind power to the rural areas.
Announcing the winners recently, Mr Mkwawa said the contractors would operate in villages of different districts in the country.
“This is the third time we are issuing funds to contractors,” he said, explaining that the agency had issued funds to 15 firms last year to that effect.
The Rea Board chairman enumerated the successful contractors as Renewable Energy Awareness Promotion (Reap) Tanzania and Lucas EMS for Mbarali and Babati districts, respectively.
Others are T&A Business Centre Limited for Rufiji, L’S Solution limited for Ngorongoro, Arusha Technical College Arumeru, Greenleaf Technology Solution Company Limited for Kilwa, Resco for Morogoro, Space Engineering Limited for Kilombero, and the MasterPlan Limited for Kibondo.
On the list also are Nishati Association Limited, PowerGen Renewable Energy, Sham Engineering, Wananchi Power Provider Limited, Tandem, Temdo, and Dobra Group Limited for Makete, Rorya, Ukerewe, Nyasa, Mkuranga, Ngorongoro, and Iramba districts, respectively.
Rex Energy, Arti Energy Limited, Konyovu Curing, and MK Centre Training and Research Institute have been tasked with distribution of electricity in Ukerewe, Kilosa, Kigoma Rural, and Iringa Rural districts, respectively.
