Dar es Salaam port, the current largest port in Tanzania: the port will be expanded by adding a roll-on roll-off terminal among other facilities
The government had earlier on cancelled a contentious US$523m project involving the construction of berths number 13 and 14 due to “unrealistic and questionable” costs. The government has also planned to construct Bagamoyo port at Mbegani creek at a cost of US$11bn, whose phase one is expected to kick off this year.
Tanzania Ports Authority has called on bidders to tender for the Dar es Salaam maritime gateway improvement project, which will be funded by the World Bank through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).
The Dar es Salaam maritime gateway improvement project, which entails designing and building of roll-on roll-off terminal in the Dar es Salaam port, deepening and strengthening berths 1-7 at the port, and construction of terminals, will also receive grants from the Department for International Development (DFID) and Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA).
This is part of the government’s plan to expand Dar es Salaam port. The government’s intention to borrow funds from World Bank to fund the Dar es Salaam maritime gateway improvement project was announced by the Transport Minister Dr Harrison Mwakyembe in May this year when announcing the country’s budget.
The bidding will be conducted, according to the document calling on bids, through the International Competitive Bidding (ICB). The project will also be executed according to guidelines provided in the 2011 World Bank’s Guidelines: Procurement of Goods, Works and Non-Consulting Services under IBRD Loans and IDA Credits and Grants by World Bank Borrower.
Bidders will be required to check eligibility as stipulated in the Procurement Guidelines. Further information about the bid can also be gotten from the Director of Procurement & Supplies, Tanzania Ports Authority office or via email. The deadline for submission is set at November 18, 2014.
