VIETNAM PHONE FIRM EYES TANZANIA LOCAL MARKET

President Jakaya Kikwete
PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete has met and held discussions with a delegation of Viettel Group, a telecommunications company from Vietnam. The delegation from Vietnam was led by Mr Le Dang Dung, the Vice President for Viettel Telecommunications Group.
It is a state-owned enterprise and Vietnam's largest mobile network operator. At the meeting held at State House in Dar es Salaam on Monday, Mr Dung was accompanied by Mr Tao Duc Thang who is the Director for Viettel Global.
Mr Dung explained to President Kikwete on plans by Viettel to invest in telecommunications in Tanzania especially in rural areas. It has been reported earlier this year that Viettel was exploring investment options in Tanzania as it seeks to expand an international footprint that currently comprises operating licences in seven foreign markets.
The Vietnamese firm already operates a cellular service in neighbouring Mozambique, is active in Timor Leste, Cambodia, Laos and Haiti.
