Dar es Salaam - May 18, 2026: PASS Trust has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and youth awareness through a tree planting initiative held at Kisarawe Secondary School as part of its broader Inclusive Green Growth agenda.

The initiative, conducted under the theme “1 Tree for a Sustainable Future – Helping Communities Care for the Land that Supports their Livelihoods and their Future,” brought together students, teachers, community leaders, government representatives, and stakeholders in a collective effort to promote environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability awareness.

The activity forms part of PASS Trust’s wider sustainability commitment, with the institution targeting to plant more than 2,000 trees this year through various community-centered initiatives that integrate environmental conservation, youth engagement, and sustainable agriculture awareness.

Speaking during the event, PASS Trust Director of Finance and Administration, Doreen Mangesho emphasized that the initiative extends beyond tree planting and seeks to nurture long-term environmental consciousness among young people.

“Today is not simply about planting trees. It is about planting responsibility, awareness, and long-term thinking among young people. The future of agriculture depends heavily on how well we protect the environment today,” she said.

 

She explained that PASS Trust intentionally selected a school environment because sustainability education must begin with future generations.

“We wanted students to understand that agriculture and environmental conservation go hand in hand. Protecting the environment is also about protecting livelihoods, food systems, and future economic opportunities,” she added.

KIGALI, RWANDA – May 17, 2026: Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Kairuki, has overseen the signing of a financing partnership worth more than TZS 40 billion between National Bank of Commerce (NBC) and British International Investment (BII) aimed at expanding access to financial services for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across Tanzania.

The agreement, announced on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum 2026 held in Kigali over the weekend, will provide long-term financing over a five-year period to support business expansion, strengthen economic resilience and improve the competitiveness of Tanzanian businesses across key productive sectors.

Minister Kairuki attended the signing ceremony on behalf of the Government of Tanzania, which holds a 30 percent stake in NBC Bank. The event was also attended by senior NBC executives led by the bank’s Managing Director, Theobald Sabi, alongside Managing Director and Head of Africa at BII, Chris Chijiutomi.

Through the partnership, MSMEs will gain access to working capital, domestic and international trade finance services, and innovative financial solutions designed to help businesses scale and compete more effectively in regional markets.

The programme, which concluded on 14 May 2026, provided a full year of structured, hands-on professional development to a cohort of 35 Tanzanian graduates deployed across key technical and administrative departments at the mine.

The support will benefit National Mental Health Hospital Mirembe, Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, and Benjamin Mkapa Hospital — institutions that play a vital role in mental healthcare, regional referral services, and specialized medical treatment in Tanzania.

The supplies included 300 hospital bed sheets, 150 surgical gloves, 450 syringes, and 90 delivery packs. The roadshow provided investors, capital market stakeholders and financial institutions with an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the Uganda Infrastructure Sovereign Sukuk valued at €205 million, alongside an additional Green Shoe Option of €30 million, as part of the broader €495 million Sukuk issuance programme.

Speaking during the session, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at Uganda’s Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Mr. Patrick Ocailap, said the initiative is intended to diversify infrastructure financing sources while attracting both regional and international investors seeking Shariah-compliant investment opportunities.

Among the key features of the Sukuk are its asset-backed and tradable structure, offering enhanced security and flexibility for investors.

In addition, the Sukuk’s coupon payments and redemption amounts are protected through Takaful insurance arrangements, while the rating process by the International Islamic Rating Agency (IIRA) is currently underway.

To further enhance investor appeal, the Government of Uganda has also provided tax exemptions on investors’ return payments linked to the Sukuk programme.

MWANGA HAKIKA BANK SURPASSES HALF A TRILLION IN ASSETS, SIGNALING STRONG GROWTH IN TANZANIA

Mwanga, Kilimanjaro — Mwanga Hakika Bank (MHB) has recorded strong growth across key financial indicators in 2025, reinforcing its position among Tanzania’s fastest-growing banks.

According to the bank’s latest financial statements, total assets increased by 44.9 percent to Sh470.8 billion in 2025, up from Sh324.9 billion recorded in 2024. The milestone reflects the lender’s rapid expansion and growing confidence from customers and investors alike.

The impressive growth was largely driven by a significant rise in lending activity, with loans to customers climbing by 53 percent to Sh305.3 billion from Sh199.5 billion in the previous year. Customer deposits also registered robust growth, increasing by 47.8 percent to Sh317.6 billion from Sh214.9 billion.

Speaking on the performance, the bank’s leadership said the results demonstrate increasing trust among customers who continue to both save and borrow through the institution.

“What this tells us is that customers’ confidence in our bank is high. They have not only entrusted us with their deposits but have also continued borrowing from us,” said the bank’s management during the presentation of the results.

The bank attributed the growth to its strategic focus on operational efficiency and customer-centered banking solutions aimed at delivering stress-free banking experiences.

The strong balance sheet performance also translated into improved shareholder returns, with profit after tax rising to Sh13.2 billion in 2025 from Sh9.9 billion recorded in 2024.

“This year, the Bank successfully reached half a trillion in total assets, a remarkable milestone achieved within just five years of operation. This achievement reflects the Bank’s strong growth trajectory and demonstrates the increasing confidence and trust we continue to earn in the Tanzanian market,” the bank stated.

Exim: Geita ni Kitovu Muhimu cha Uchumi

Kwa upande wake, Afisa Mtendaji Mkuu wa Exim Bank Tanzania, Jaffari Matundu, alisema ufunguzi wa tawi hilo ni sehemu ya mkakati wa benki hiyo kusogeza huduma karibu na maeneo yenye shughuli kubwa za kiuchumi.

“Geita ni kitovu muhimu cha shughuli za kiuchumi kinachoendeshwa na sekta ya madini pamoja na biashara zinazoiunga mkono. BRITAM INVESTS TZS 40 MILLION IN WATER PROJECTS AND TREE PLANTING FOR DAR ES SALAAM SCHOOLS

 

Initiative Targets Clean Water Access and Climate Resilience

Britam Insurance Tanzania has invested TZS 40 million in a clean water initiative benefiting two primary schools in Dar es Salaam, reinforcing efforts to improve access to safe water while promoting climate-resilient infrastructure in public institutions.

The project, implemented in partnership with Davis & Shirtliff, involved the installation of solar-powered water pumping systems at Uhuru Mchanganyiko Primary School and Mshikamano Primary School.

As part of the environmental initiative, tree planting activities were also conducted at Mshikamano Primary School to support climate conservation efforts and create a greener learning environment for pupils.

Sustainable Solutions for Communities

Speaking during the project launch, The Chief Executive Officer of Britam Insurance Tanzania, Farai Dogo said the initiative was designed to address both social and environmental challenges while reducing dependence on electricity in areas where power supply remains limited or unreliable.

“This investment reflects our strategy to empower communities through sustainable solutions that also support environmental protection,” said Dogo.

According to the company, the solar-powered systems are expected to benefit more than 10,000 people, including pupils, teachers, and surrounding communities, through improved access to clean and reliable water.

Feasibility Study Guided School Selection

Britam Insurance Marketing Manager, Leoncia Makubo said the systems were installed following a feasibility study conducted in May 2025, which assessed water access gaps across several schools before selecting the two beneficiaries.

The initiative forms part of Britam’s broader corporate social responsibility programme focused on water access, education, and environmental sustainability across East Africa.

Supporting Education and Environmental Awareness

At Mshikamano Primary School, the project is expected to improve daily school operations, including food preparation for nursery pupils, while also enhancing hygiene standards.

The tree planting exercise conducted at the school is expected to strengthen environmental awareness among pupils and contribute to long-term sustainability goals.

Digital Investment Transactions Surge to TZS 6.9 Billion

DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzania is experiencing a rapid rise in digital investing among young people, following strong growth in the partnership between Mixx by Yas and the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE).

Digital investment transactions conducted through the partnership increased from TZS 840 million to TZS 6.9 billion within a year, signaling growing public interest in mobile-based investment solutions.

The growth was highlighted during the Mixx and DSE partnership event held in Dar es Salaam under the theme “The Role of Digital Payments in Powering the Next Generation of Investors.”

Mixx Expands Beyond Mobile Money

Speaking during the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Mixx by Yas, Angelica Pesha, said the company is broadening its focus beyond traditional mobile money services by creating opportunities for Tanzanians to invest and build wealth digitally.

“We have always believed that financial inclusion is not complete without investment inclusion,” said Pesha. “It is not enough for people to send and receive money; we must empower them to grow their wealth, own assets and actively participate in our capital markets.”

She explained that the integration of DSE’s Hisa Kiganjani platform into the Mixx Super App has simplified investing by enabling users to buy shares directly through their mobile phones without complicated onboarding procedures.

According to Pesha, investor numbers on the platform increased from 6,800 to 32,000 within one year, while transactions rose from 8,600 to more than 41,500.

“This growth shows that when access is simplified and designed around the user experience, participation increases dramatically,” she added.

Pesha also noted that services such as Kibubu, Bustisha and digital investment products reflect Mixx’s ambition to become a broader financial empowerment platform for Tanzanians.

Pesha said the growing participation of Gen Z investors demonstrates how technology is changing investment culture in Tanzania.

“You no longer need large amounts of money to start investing. Through digital platforms, investment opportunities are now accessible to everyone,” she said.

DATA AND MOBILE MONEY POWER AIRTEL AFRICA PROFIT SURGE AS EARNINGS MORE THAN DOUBLE

Data usage and mobile money services powered a strong earnings surge for Airtel Africa, as the telecoms group posted record revenue and profit for the financial year ended 31 March 2026, reflecting accelerating digital adoption across its 14 African markets.

The company reported that net profit more than doubled to $813 million, up from $328 million a year earlier, supported by higher operating income and foreign exchange gains.

Revenue increased by 29.5% in reported currency to $6.42 billion, while constant currency growth stood at 24%, underscoring broad-based demand across its core operations across Africa.

Airtel Africa said the strong performance was driven primarily by rapid growth in data consumption and mobile financial services, which continue to reshape the company’s revenue mix and deepen customer engagement across the continent.

Chief Executive Officer Sunil Taldar said the results reflected strong operational fundamentals and disciplined execution, with digital adoption and network investment remaining central to the company’s long-term growth strategy.

“Our strategy delivered record customer additions, revenue and EBITDA growth,” Taldar said. “Data and mobile money remain key engines of expansion as we scale digital access across our footprint.”

The company’s customer base increased by 10.5% to 183.5 million, marking the highest net additions in Airtel Africa’s history.
