Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates–Etihad Airways has officially opened its Etihad Eco Residence, Abu Dhabi’s first purpose-built, sustainable Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum rated cabin crew accommodation. The project is the result of a unique partnership between the UAE’s national airline and the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, Masdar.

ENSURE POWER AFFORDABILITY - PRESIDENT MAGUFULI

Minister of Energy, Dr. Medard Kalemani briefs President John Magufuli on the 240 MW Kinyerezi II before the official launch of the power plant in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Given increasing electricity generation from cheaper sources such as gas and the envisaged 2,100MW Stiegler’s Gorge hydropower project, President John Magufuli has tasked responsible State institutions to consider lowering tariffs to enable ordinary people to afford the energy.

Dr Magufuli blamed costly diesel-fired plants operated by independent power producers (IPPs) and emergency power producers (EPPs) for higher electricity charges, which can hardly be afforded by ordinary people.

The country’s installed capacity from all sources stands at 1,513MW against the demand of about 1,400MW, President Magufuli explained yesterday during commissioning of Kinyerezi II gas-fired plant with the capacity of 240MW. At the cost of 344 million US dollars (about 774bn/-), the project, whose construction started in 2016, has started pumping into the national grid 167MW while the remaining megawatts will be added in phases to reach its full capacity.

Japanese lenders provided loans amounting to 292.4 million US dollars for the project, while the government of Tanzania dished out the remaining 51.6 million US dollars. “Efforts are still needed to produce at least 5,000MW by the year 2020 to enable Tanzania achieve the industrialised economy. “With the envisaged increment in generation, it is high time Tanesco (Tanzania Electric Supply Company) and the Ministry of Energy started making consideration to reduce tariffs to enable more people to access electricity,” Dr Magufuli stressed.

TANAPA, EXIM LAUNCH NEW COLLECTION SYSTEM

EXIM Tanzania has reached another milestone in its digital initiatives after launching a new collection system where registered Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) tour operators can now make online payments from their offices.

The system is another partnership between TANAPA and Exim Bank Tanzania and will run parallel with the current system of payment by Exim Cards and Exim PoS at the gates. “What this means is that they will be able to book and pay for park fees and print entry passes.

This will reduce the tourist waiting time at the gates significantly, improve the efficiency of TANAPA and allow more tour operators to do business with Exim Bank,” the Bank’s Market ing and Communications Head, Mr Stanley Kafu said.

Mr Kafu said that the new e-commerce portal also means convenient and secure payments, which are done anytime, and anywhere, real time confirmations with receipts updated at TANAPA, hassle free experience at the gates and complete operational control.

BUDGETARY INSIGHTS TO SPUR DEVELOPMENT OF REAL ESTATE

The construction sector is an important contributor of the economies of most nations, Tanzania included. This sector also plays the role of the barometer that tells at any particular point in time, how the economy is fairing.

The booming of the construction sector signals that all is well with the economy while its sluggishness would suggest the opposite. By its nature, the construction sector is wide and includes activities happening in the real estate, infrastructure projects such as roads, ports etc.

For the sake of today’s discussion, we will focus on activities happening in the real estate sector as well as exploring some insights on how the sector could benefit as the government recent pronouncements requiring it to contribute more in the government coffers through enhanced collections of property tax.

Across the globe, the property tax forms an important source of government or rather local government revenues. In the context of Tanzania, this tax is now positioning itself as an important mainstream source of government revenue to finance the national budget that trickles down to the local government as well.

While this could be something that makes property owners think they will have to dig further into their pockets to settle their tax dues, I would say this is good news to the sector.

Homeowners and developers should now sit down and relax as the government’s decision to elevate the property tax as part of reliable revenue sources to finance the national budget means it will now do all what it takes to develop the sector.

TANZANIA AIRSPACE NOW UNDER CONTROL

President John Magufuli lays the foundation stone for the project of the installation of four surveillance radar systems at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Tanzania could save up to 1.2bn/- annually following installation of four radar stations, whose construction President John Magufuli signaled yesterday when he laid the foundation stones in Dar es Salaam.

The president explained that Tanzania was paying neighbouring Kenya that much in surveillance charges on its uncovered airspace. Currently, Tanzania has only one radar that covers a mere quarter (25 per cent) of its airspace, which rendered Kenya opportunity to monitor the remaining uncovered aerospace upon being delegated by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) – also giving our neighbours virtual monopoly over surveillance charges.

“… so we’ve been losing 1.2bn/- paying surveillance fees every year because large parts of our airspace was monitored by neighbouring Kenya … just because we’ve only one radar station … (an old one) installed in 2002,” he said.

At an event which opened the new chapter of airspace surveillance for Tanzania, the Head of State also said the new radar stations would further strengthen the country’s security and attract more investors within its aviation sector.

AIR TANZANIA NOW BOASTS STIFF COMPETITION

The aviation industry within the six-nation East African Community (EAC) is set to get more abuzz as Tanzania embarks on an ambitious investment aimed at boosting the fleet of its national carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL).

Until recently on the brink of collapse with hardly a plane to its name, the fleet of ATCL now stands at three Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 planes, one of which landed at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar Salaam yesterday.

Plans are also afoot for three additional planes later this year, including two Bombardier Dash 8 Next Generation Q300 from Canada and one Boeing 787-Dreamliner from the United States – bringing to six the total number of its fleet.

Currently focused on local routes, the new airplanes would enable the Tanzania flag bearer to expand its wings within the region and beyond. The Comoros Island in the Indian Ocean is currently the only foreign route served by ATCL. Speaking at a ceremony to receive the aircraft, President John Magufuli was highly optimistic that the planes would contribute to Tanzania’s development agenda.

Earlier, two Q400 planes were delivered in 2016. The brand new $32m (about 65bn/) 76-seater turboprop landed at JNIA’s Terminal One at exactly 05:10 where it was accorded the customary ‘water salute.’ “ … this is your property … we bought with our own money … let’s use it for the development of this nation,” a visibly jovial Magufuli told the gathering which had turned out to witness the event.

ALL EYES ON BUNGE AS BUDGET SITTING STARTS

Dar es Salaam. The marathon parliamentary sitting in which MPs will also debate the government’s budget for the 2018/19 financial year starts today in Dodoma.

Tanzanians in general, and members of the business community in particular, are eager to know what kind of budget the government will come up with, and whether it will really meet their assorted expectations.

Members of the business community, and private sector players at large, expect that the legislators would deliberate on the types and numbers of taxes that should be trashed, or, at least, revamped. This is to enable the government to realise its cherished industrialisation dream of transforming Tanzania into a semi-industrialized middle-income country as per the National Development Vision 2025.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS ELIMINATES 195,000 TONNES OF CARBON EMISSIONS IN 2017

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – Etihad Airways successfully eliminated around 195,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2017, thanks to a wide range of fuel-saving initiatives across its network.

Following a number of improvements aimed at enhancing operational efficiencies, Etihad was able to reduce the amount of fuel consumed by its aircraft by over 62,000 tonnes of fuel. The result represents a 3.3 per cent improvement from the year before, and is the equivalent of 850 flights between Abu Dhabi and London.

For instance, flight plan adjustments across the network reduced approximately 900 hours of flying time, leading to a saving of 5,400 tonnes of fuel and eliminating approximately 17,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Last year, Etihad Airways also retired several older aircraft in favour of the Boeing 787, one of the most fuel efficient commercial aircraft in operation due to its lightweight composite structure. Etihad currently operates 19 Boeing 787s in its 115-strong fleet of passenger and cargo aircraft, which is one of the youngest in the skies at an average age of 5.4 years.
