GEITA, TANZANIA – 16 AUGUST 2026: Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) and the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) have entered into a three-year strategic partnership to support specialised cardiac surgeries for up to 300 children in Tanzania, marking a significant expansion of their collaboration to improve access to life-saving paediatric cardiac care.
The partnership seeks to improve access to critical cardiac treatment, particularly for children from underprivileged communities, while also strengthening cardiovascular health awareness, preventive healthcare and community outreach.
Speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), GGML Managing Director Ashraf Suryaningrat said the partnership demonstrates the company’s commitment to working with national institutions to address critical healthcare needs and contribute to improving the quality of life for Tanzanians.
“Behind every child requiring cardiac surgery is a family hoping for an opportunity to see their child recover, grow and realise their potential. Through this partnership with JKCI, we are helping turn that hope into possibility by supporting access to specialised cardiac care over the next three years.”
TZS 1.2 BILLION COMMITMENT
Under the MoU, GGML will provide financial support for cardiac surgeries for 100 children each year for three years, representing an annual commitment of TZS 400 million and a potential total investment of TZS 1.2 billion over the duration of the partnership.
The partnership builds on GGML’s existing support for paediatric cardiac care. Since November 2024, GGML has worked with JKCI and healthcare partners to help bridge the treatment funding gap faced by vulnerable families.
In 2025, the company committed TZS 56 million, supporting life-saving cardiac surgery for 14 children.
JKCI Executive Director Dr. Peter Kisenge welcomed the expanded partnership, noting that it will enable more children requiring specialised cardiac intervention to access treatment.
“For many families, the cost of specialised cardiac treatment can stand between a child and the care they urgently need. This partnership will enable us to reach more children requiring intervention while strengthening our efforts in prevention, early detection and cardiovascular health awareness. We appreciate GGML’s continued partnership and investment in the health of Tanzanians.”
BROADER HEALTHCARE CONTRIBUTION
The partnership with JKCI forms part of GGML’s broader contribution to improving health and wellbeing in Tanzania. The company’s healthcare initiatives span specialised medical care, healthcare infrastructure, disease prevention, community health education and programmes designed to reach underserved populations.
Among these initiatives is GGML’s longstanding support for the MV Jubilee Hope Medical Boat, which delivers healthcare services to remote island communities across Lake Victoria.
The medical vessel serves communities across more than 10 large islands and dozens of smaller islands, helping overcome geographical barriers that can make access to conventional healthcare difficult. Through this initiative, healthcare services have reached more than 500,000 people across Lake Victoria’s island communities.
GGML’s contribution to health also extends to the national response to HIV and AIDS through the GGM Kili Challenge, which for more than two decades has brought together the private sector, government, development partners and communities to raise funds and awareness in support of HIV prevention, treatment and care programmes.
EXPANDING ACCESS TO SPECIALISED CARE
The GGML-JKCI partnership adds another important dimension to these healthcare efforts by combining support for preventive and community healthcare with expanded access to highly specialised medical treatment.
By supporting cardiac surgeries for 300 children over three years, the partnership is expected to help vulnerable families overcome financial barriers to critical treatment while contributing to better health outcomes for children across Tanzania.
The collaboration also highlights the important role of partnerships between the private sector and national healthcare institutions in addressing specialised healthcare needs and improving access to essential medical services.
