Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — 25 July 2025
In a powerful demonstration of corporate social responsibility, Diamond Trust Bank Tanzania Plc (DTB), in collaboration with ARISE, has donated 20 desktop computers and 135 tree seedlings to Songoro Mnyonge Secondary School in Salasala, Dar es Salaam. The donation is part of the “Adopt a Tree” programme and reflects a broader commitment to digital education, environmental sustainability, and community upliftment.
The official handover ceremony, held at the school premises, brought together representatives from DTB, ARISE, the school administration, and the surrounding community.
Bridging the Digital Divide Through E-Waste Reuse
The refurbished desktop computers, which were previously used by DTB, will now serve to establish a fully equipped computer lab at the school. This move will significantly improve access to digital learning tools, boosting ICT literacy among students.
“This initiative is simple yet powerful — a smart way to reduce and recycle electronic waste while creating a positive educational impact,” said a representative from ARISE.
The program exemplifies how thoughtful reuse of resources can bridge digital gaps in public education while promoting responsible consumption, aligned with SDG 12 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Greening Schools, Empowering Youth
In addition to promoting digital inclusion, 135 tree seedlings were also donated and will be planted within the school compound, fostering a greener and more eco-conscious learning environment.
This initiative forms part of DTB’s #MuchMoreThanTrees campaign, under which the bank has already planted over 100,000 trees towards its 1 million tree target by 2030—supporting its net zero strategy and reinforcing its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Together with ARISE, DTB plans to plant over 600 trees at Songoro Mnyonge Secondary School.
A Collaboration Rooted in Purpose
ARISE, a youth-led not-for-profit founded by sisters Inaya, Simar, and Rania, continues to empower communities through initiatives that educate, empower, and conserve. In addition to environmental and tech initiatives, ARISE also supports a hot meal program at the school, encouraging student attendance and wellness.
“Our partnership with ARISE is anchored in shared values — to make education accessible, sustainable, and impactful for the next generation,” noted a DTB spokesperson.
Supporting the Sustainable Development Agenda
This initiative reflects DTB’s dedication to community-based ESG programs and directly supports key UN Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 4 – Quality Education
- SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13 – Climate Action
Long-Term Vision for Impact
DTB’s broader ESG strategy aims to foster long-term, meaningful community impact through sustainable partnerships across Tanzania. The Songoro Mnyonge School project demonstrates how financial institutions can drive social progress and environmental stewardship hand-in-hand.
