September 12 2018 - The leading mobile network operator, Vodacom Tanzania PLC today has signed a partnership deal with Google to give customers the option to pay for content on the Google Play Store using Vodacom Airtime balance. The service, which is now available to all Vodacom customers using devices powered by Android, integrates Google Play Store Apps purchase with Vodacom Airtime mode of payment.
Speaking to reporters at the launch, Vodacom Head of Communication and Public Relations, Ms Jacquiline Materu, said: “Leveraging VODACOM’s superfast 4G Network, we are thrilled to partner with Google to bring this convenient, easy and reliable method of payment for Google Play Store Apps purchases to Tanzania. This further cements our commitment to deliver digital inclusion, whilst providing more convenience and value to our customers. This is more pertinent to our market where credit card penetration is low.”
Vodacom customers with Android devices can now more easily pay for content in the Google Play Store, such as apps, games, music, films, TV shows and e-books, using their Airtime balance. Previously, only credit cards and other modes of payment were used to make purchases.
Ms Materu continued to elaborate that this solution will simplify the bill payment process and enhance overall customer experience.
“As a platform for content delivery, we bear a responsibility to inform, educate and entertain our customers through technology. We have made great strides by providing access with ease to various social digital platforms and creating an inclusive digital ecosystem for everyone,” she added.
On her side Cassandra Mensah-Abrampah, Android Platform Partnerships Manager Africa from Google, said, “We are very excited to expand the Google Play Direct Carrier Billing partnership with Vodacom Group and launch with Vodacom Tanzania. Carrier billing is one of the key drivers for financial inclusion in the app economy in markets where most of the people are still unbanked.”
Customers wishing to take advantage of this payment solution simply need to enter Google play store > Select a content (Games/Apps or Movies) > Go to Buy option > then Select Vodacom Airtime billing as mode of payment then you will be required to enter your personal details then proceed with payment after confirmation. These step are only required for the first purchase and for next purchases, payment should happen automatically, upon selection of Vodacom Airtime billing.
