Dar es Salaam motorists and commuters may now heave a sigh of relief following good news that the eagerly awaited Tazara flyover, the intersection of Nyerere Road and Nelson Mandela Expressway, will now be operational in September, almost a month before the previously set deadline.
Trials for the flyover, the first overpass to be constructed in Dar es Salaam City, will be conducted in August.
Currently, confusion reigns most at the spot as traffic is supposed to flow while construction is also required to go ahead. However, police officers, assisted by few other workers sweat it out to mitigate the situation.
But, all this is set to be temporary as the construction work for the magnificent flyover bridge has reached 88.82 per cent.
The completion of the overpass will indeed bring a sigh of relief to motorists and
commuters who have been spending two to three hours to travel to and from the City Centre to the airport due to acute traffic jams.
The Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa disclosed in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday when he visited the construction site and witnessed the progress of the project.
I am pleased with the progress as the construction work is in its final stages... so far, all parts of the bridge have been completed, the remaining task is on the approach roads.
Since everything went as planned, we intend to launch the flyover in September this year and if all goes well President John Magufuli is going to be doing the opening,” said Prof Mbarawa.
He observed that the contractor for the entire two million working hours that were spent by the end of May, this year, has never experienced any accident. This means no time has been lost to deal with the accidents.
Prof Mbarawa also pointed out that Tazara flyover is not going to be the only one in the city, citing many others at different sites including Kurasini area, Chang’ombe junction, Morogoro Juction and Mwenge.
He, however, noted among other major constructions that the government has ventured into as the Ubungo Interchange project and Selander Bridge in a bid to open the city of Dar es Salaam.
To make it possible, over 20bn/- has been set aside in the financial year 2018/2019 for the implementation of the anticipated projects,” he noted. As the Government is working tirelessly to make sure projects of this nature are implemented and completed, Prof Mbarawa rolled over the ball to the people to ensure that they are properly handled for their sustainability.
The Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania, Mr Masaharu Yoshida, noted that all the construction work including the super structure is almost completed, therefore everything is as scheduled.
On behalf of the government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), I extend recognition to the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication, the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), the contractor and construction company for according the support needed to complete the project, without forgetting the traffic police, they are also doing a great job,” noted Mr Yoshida. According to TANROADS Dar es Salaam Regional Manager, Eng Julius Ndyamukama, the project will be completed in September; however the planned construction completion period was expected for October.
Because of the expertise and support being rendered, the project is one month earlier than the expected period. Like any other projects, challenges had been anticipated but, we managed to control them,” said Eng Ndyamukama.
Funded by Japanese government through a grant aid and partly the government of Tanzania, the project is expected to cost about 95bn/- upon completion.
