AfDB CHAMPIONS ENERGY ACCESS AND JOB CREATION FOR YOUTH AT THE WEF

At the just-concluded World Economic Forum on Africa, the African Development Bank reiterated the need to improve energy access to all in efforts to industrialise the continent. President Akinwumi Adesina, while participating in a presidential panel on Implementing Africa's Development Agendas, said, "Without electricity, nothing happens. We need to light up and power Africa as energy is key to industrialisation".

Adesina shared the Bank's 10-year roadmap for tackling Africa's huge energy deficit, noting that the strategy would boost the continent's industrial capacity and competitiveness. Energy is at the top of the Bank's High 5 priorities - Light up and power Africa; Feed Africa; Industrialise Africa; Integrate Africa; and improve the quality of life for the people of Africa.

Under the energy strategy the Bank will invest US$12 billion of its own resources in the energy sector in five years, and will partner with other players to mobilise domestic and international capital for innovative financing in Africa's energy industry. The initiative is expected to increase on-grid generation by 160 GW of new capacity by 2025, nearly doubling the continent's existing capacity.

Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon expressed support for the Bank's initiative which seeks to exploit the continent's massive resources for both conventional and renewable energy. Bongo committed to increase his country's resource allocation to the energy sector.

CEO, Mikono Speakers International,
Mr. Deogratius Kilawe.
Mikono Speakers International is proud to announce and host the first ever Tanzania financial service expo. This event will see many financial players taking part. These will include but not limited to insurance companies, banks, social security funds, microfinance institutions and payment gateway solution providers. TFSE will make the most of unique 'zones' for exhibitors to cover a broad range of markets including mortgages, insurance, commercial lending, alternative lending, legal, distribution, and technology.

The event will take place in Dar es Salaam at Diamond Jubilee in the VIP hall on the 10th and the 11th of November 2016, from 10am to 7pm. This event is open to the general public to attend for free.

This event is particularly important because according to statistics only 15% of the Tanzanian population is banked and only 0.9% are covered by insurance. AfDB APPROVES A PARTIAL CREDIT GUARANTEE TO TANZANIA MORTGAGE REFINANCE COMPANY

The African Development Bank Group’s (AfDB) Board of Directors, on May 5, 2016 approved a Partial Credit Guarantee (PCG) of up to US $4 million in local currency to Tanzania Mortgage Refinance Company (TMRC).

The Partial Credit Guarantee (PCG) will support TMRC’s proposed Medium Term Note Program to raise long-term funding from the Tanzanian local currency bond markets on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) for on-lending to local banks for mortgage finance operations. The Bank’s PCG will enable TMRC’s bond to meet minimum requirements for listing on the DSE thereby enhancing TMRC’s capacity to mobilize critical long-term funding required for the growth of Tanzania's housing finance markets, and catalyzing the construction of affordable housing.

The Bank intervention is in line with the High 5s agenda for the Bank Group, building on its existing 2013-2022 Strategy, and specifically on the 5th agenda of Improving the Quality of Life for the People of Africa. The five focus areas are essential in transforming the lives of the African people and therefore consistent with the United Nations agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Bank’s intervention will also result in multiplier effects on industries related to the real estate sector and creation of jobs in the construction industry. It will also assist in deepening of Tanzania’s capital markets by increasing the number of listed corporate bonds in the local bond market as well as match assets and liabilities of the institution. The PCG will complement the Tanzanian Government’s efforts to develop a self-sustaining long-term mortgage market in Tanzania.
