INDEPENDENT POWER TANZANIA LIMITED (IPTL) JOINS FIGHT AGAINST MALARIA

21st April 2015: In commemoration of World Malaria Day 2015, a day that gives people the chance to promote and learn about the efforts made to prevent and reduce Malaria around the world, Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL), a subsidiary of Pan Africa Power Solutions (T) Limited (PAP), will join the rest of the world to support efforts of eradicating malaria cases in Tanzania.

According to a statement released yesterday by the Company Secretary and Chief Counsel, Mr. Joseph Makandege, the Company will provide treated mosquito nets to several health facilities surrounding its power plant in Tegeta, Dar es Salaam.

“We are proud to be part of this important campaign that will actively play a role in promoting and supporting World Malaria Day so as to help end Malaria related deaths in Tanzania by using our core capacity as a company. Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL) will be working with the health facilities that are the coordinating authority for health. As part of our support, we take this opportunity to donate treated mosquito nets to several health facilities that surround our Power Plant. In addition, we will also create awareness and promote malaria education and prevention to the community and our employees.

“This is one of the areas to which our Executive Chairman, Mr. Harbinder Singh Sethi, and the Board altogether have directed IPTL/PAP management to focus on during the first phase of implementation of our strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. This event is held to support the prevention, treatment and control of malaria. We are calling for greater support towards protecting and treating people who are at risk of malaria,” reads part of the statement.

He pointed out that the planned support is set to benefit both in-patients and out-patient those who will be advised to have a bed-rest in those targeted health facilities, because IPTL believes that investing in malaria remains one of the ‘best buys’ in global health, with reductions in malaria unlocking human potential and economic growth.

“We have identified the number of hospitals within our which we shall avail with the requisite beds and nets. IPTL/PAP under the directive of the Executive Chairman, Mr. Harbinder Singh Sethi, will provide treated mosquito nets to all hospital beds in those health centers towards key malaria interventions. This will ensure that patients who go for treatment in these health centers stay free from malaria. The mosquito nets will also help the new borne and their mothers from being infected by Malaria,” he said.

Malaria is a major public health problem in Tanzania with annual deaths estimated at 60,000, with 80 percent of these deaths among children under five years of age. Approximately 14 to 18 million clinical malaria cases are reported annually by public health services and more than 40 percent of all outpatient visits are attributed to malaria.
