Dar es Salaam. Five Tanzanians are among top 100 Africans recognized by Paris-based Institut Choiseul as young economic leaders for tomorrow.

The top 100 personnel were selected with regard to their dynamism, exceptional course and an active contribution to the emergence of Africa as a major player in the global economy, according to Dr Pascal Lorot, president of the Institut Choiseul.

The five Tanzanians who emerged in the list include Mohamed Dewji, 39, chief executive officer of Mohamed Entreprises Tanzania Ltd, Genevieve Sangudi, 37, The Carlyle Group deputy general manager for sub-Saharan Africa and Elsie Kanza, 38, head of Africa at the World Economic Forum.

TANZANIA TUMBLES IN GOVERNANCE INDEX

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania performance in the 2014 Mo Ibrahim Index of African Governance has tumbled—with the country dropping five places—from 10th position in 2012 to 15th in the latest index—that ranked 52 countries in Africa.

But, in the East African region, Tanzania ranks second behind Rwanda, followed by Kenya, Uganda and Burundi.

The fall, according to the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) is due to poor performance in personal safety, rural sector, accountability, rights, business environment, education and rule of law.

FASTJET ANNOUNCES INTERIM RESULTS FOR THE SIX MONTHS ENDED 30 JUNE 2014

Strong growth in first half passenger numbers and new international routes launched

30 September 2014 - fastjet, the low cost African airline, announces its unaudited interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2014 and operational highlights of 2014 to date.

Financial highlights

·         Tanzania first-half revenues grew 96% to $19.0 million, with a 41.5% increase in passenger numbers.

·         Tanzanian average revenue per passenger for the period grew 39.3% to $81.65.

·         First-half underlying EBIT loss of $30.5 million, including US$13.9 million trading losses in the Tanzanian operation.

·         Fly540 Ghana and Angola had a $13.5 million adverse effect on the first half financial results of which $6.4 million related to a foreign exchange revaluation adjustment of US Dollar liabilities, and during the period under review, less than $100,000 of fastjet Plc cash was utilised in legacy Fly540 operations.

Operational highlights

·         Flights successfully launched from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) to Lusaka (Zambia) February 2014, from Dar es Salaam to Harare (Zimbabwe) August 2014 and from Dar es Salaam to Entebbe (Uganda) launched September 2014.

·         Fly540 Ghana and Fly540 Angola loss-making services remain suspended, with restructuring activity underway.

·         The Group disposed of its investment in Five Forty Aviation Limited (Kenya) in June 2014.

·         fastjet Tanzania aircraft utilisation increased from 5.5 hours to 7.9 hours per aircraft per day during the period and reached 9.9 hours per aircraft per day by the end of August, on track to achieve the target of 11.5 hours.

·         fastjet Tanzania punctuality averaged an excellent 90% (arrival within 15 minutes) during the period.

·         A variety of additional revenue streams were added to the business mix during the period - including car rentals, hotels and car parking.

fastjet's CEO and Interim Chairman, Ed Winter, commented:

"We are delighted to have seen a steady increase in the number of passengers travelling on core Tanzanian routes, with revenue growth of 96% against the same period last year. Strong underlying traffic growth in the first half of 2014 continues to demonstrate that fastjet's low-cost airline model works in the African market. NEW LOAN FACILITY SET TO BENEFIT TANZANIAN YOUTH

Tanzanian youth groups are to receive loans in form of working tools to boost their small and medium business initiatives and funding for the first batch is to be released by the end of the year. Making the announcement over the weekend in Arusha, the Founder & Managing Director of Tanzania SME Growth Centre (TSGC), Mr. Victor Tesha, said it is easier for the youth to be empowered when they are in groups rather than when operating individually.

Mr. Tesha further said that TSGC is determined to empower Tanzanian youth. A number of youth groups are expected to benefit from this new loan scheme, the first batch is to get their loans by December 2014. "The loan facility will be provided in terms of working tools rather than giving them cash" explained Mr. Tesha.

Loans will be provided to groups specialising in various projects. Mr. Tesha reiterated that for those without proper business skills, they will be required to organise themselves in groups of ten that have similar objectives and they will be assisted to develop their business ideas.

"The main aim of the project is to contribute in strengthening the Tanzanian economy by creating producers of goods as opposed to the buying and selling trend, which does not provide enough revenue and employment to the youth, who form 60% of the population", reiterated Mr. Tesha.

An Arusha based youth, whose group is a beneficiary of the loan scheme, Elly Barton, said the initiative is important to their business operations as it increases their working capital through access to inputs.

He commended TSCG for the initiative and urged other youth in the region to also take the step and form work groups through which they can access the loans.

KENYA TARGETS TOURISTS FROM THE REGION IN NEW PLAN

Kenya has intensified a marketing campaign in the East African region to make up for the shortfall in international tourist arrivals occasioned by terror threats.

Executives at the Kenya Tourism Board toldThe EastAfrican that the agency was now selling the country’s tourist potential across the East African region and other parts of the continent to reduce dependence on traditional markets, such as Europe, the USA and Australia.

“The East African region has immense potential with over 140 million people. We are keen on tapping into the intra-regional tourism as an extension of our domestic marketing efforts,” Kimutai Ngeno, the public relations manager at the Kenya Tourism Board said.

FIRMS GET LICENCES TO OPEN SHOP AT THE EXPORT PROCESSING ZONE IN TANZANIA

Thirteen local and foreign companies have been allowed to start operations at the Export Processing Zone in Tanzania.

According to Economic Processing Zone Authority director-general Dr Adelhelm Meru, once the operations start, about 2,346 jobs will be created and $78.35 million will be generated in the first year.

Investors have completed the required procedures and have been given licences to start production, he said.

Dr Meru said the companies will invest in various areas, which include meat processing and packaging, horticulture, cashew nuts production.

NORWEGIAN FIRM SETS ASIDE $2.5BN TO BUILD GAS, OIL PLANTS

A Norwegian company Yara International is analysing business environment between West and East Africa to build a gas plant once gas projects come on-stream.

According to Yara Tanzania managing director Pal Oystein, $2.5billion for the construction has been set aside ready for investment once the site where the plant will be built has been identified.

“Both regions are endowed with either gas or oil, and so we have to establish a good environment before we commence construction,” he said.

RURAL BANKS, SCHOOLS TO GET INTERNET VIA SATELLITE

Belgium satellite Internet provider SatADSL is rolling out the technology in remote areas in East Africa, to power financial institutions and schools broadcasting services.

The firm has partnered with Indigo Telecom in Kenya and Uganda’s Maisha Network to enable banks with microfinance institutions to install automated teller machines (ATM) as well as provide money transfer services.

SatADSL’s business development director Michel Dothey said small VSAT equipment with dishes that cost about $500 will help commercial banks and money transfer firms to expand their branch network in remote areas.

EAST AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK PREPARES TO ADMIT BURUNDI

The East African Development Bank (EADB) is to undertake its valuation that will inform how much Burundi would pay to become a member of the regional financial institution.

Last year, Bujumbura applied to join the bank, six years after Rwanda was admitted as a member of the regional institution.

In May, the board of directors of the EADB reviewed Burundi’s request and authorised management to engage a professional firm to undertake the bank’s valuation with the view to admitting Burundi.

“The process of recruiting the firm is at an advanced stage,” reads the EAC Council of Ministers report.

BUILDING OF TANZANIA'S GAS POWER PLANT ON COURSE

The Tanzanian government hopes to complete the construction of gas-fired power plants and 500km gas pipeline in December to address shortage of power supply.

According to officials from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation, 70 per cent of the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo natural gas processing plants and a transportation pipeline have been completed.

Infrastructure at the Mnazi Bay and Songo Songo, which will see a combined 244 million cubic feet of gas delivered per day will result in generation of 900MW of power by December this year and would progress to generate an estimated 3000MW of power next year.

The ministers from South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda who met in Kigali recently suggested that Value Added Tax (VAT) and other taxes airlines pay be scrapped, saying that they add to the high costs of air travel. VAT in the region ranges between 16 and 18 per cent.

If the Heads of State Summit slated to take place next week adopts the resolutions passed by the ministers, it is hoped that air travel costs could come down by more than 50 per cent, making it affordable for the majority of travellers in the region. Currently, air travel is a preserve of the privileged few.

The stage is set for a no-holds-barred war for Kenya’s $292 million mobile money transfer business after regulators ruled that overlay SIM cards can be used to deliver banking and other solutions on a one-year pilot basis.

The ruling opens the door for East Africa’s largest bank by customer base, Equity Bank, to pit its wits against the country’s largest mobile network operator, Safaricom, which controls 80 per cent of the money transferred via phone handsets.

The Communications Authority of Kenya and Central Bank of Kenya said in a joint statement on Monday that the thin SIM technology to be used by Equity’s subsidiary, Finserve, met the minimum safeguards for rollout of value added solutions.

TANZANIA TOPS IN FOREIGN INVESTMENTS INTO THE REGION

Tanzania recorded the highest Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) in 2013 within the East African Community, according to a new report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Tanzania’s inflows stood at $1.872 billion followed by Uganda at $1.146 billion and Ethiopia at $953 million.

The World Investment Report 2014 put Kenya’s share of FDI inflows at $514 million, up from $259 million in 2012, which is a 98 per cent increase. The total amount that came into the East African region was $6.2 billion, with Rwanda and Burundi receiving $111 million and $7 million respectively.

“Kenya is developing as a favoured business hub, not only for oil and gas exploration in the sub-region but also for industrial production and transport. The country is set to develop further as a regional hub for energy, services and manufacturing over the next decade,” notes the report.

TANZANIA REFUSES TO SIGN ENVIRONMENT PROTOCAL

Tanzania has scuttled the East African Community’s bid for a binding agreement on handling shared resources, such as Lake Victoria and wildlife reserves, after it refused to sign a protocol on environment and natural resources management.

This leaves the region without a framework to address long-standing conflicts over use of cross-border resources such as Lake Victoria and the Mara-Serengeti tourism haven or scarce water and pasture.

In a letter to the EAC Secretariat, dated September 4, Tanzania said the protocol — which has already been ratified by Kenya and Uganda — contradicted the one on a Common Market as it seeks to regulate trading in minerals.

“The Protocol contradicts the protocol on establishment of the EAC Common Market. In particular access to and use of land and premises should be governed by national policies and laws,” Tanzania stated in the letter to EAC Secretary General Dr Richard Sezibera.

EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY MINISTERS LOBBY FOR 'SOFTER LANDING' FOR KENYAN EXPORTS TO EUROPEAN UNION

East Africa is making last-ditch efforts to save Kenyan exporters from incurring losses of more than $140 million a year following failure to broker a trade deal that would have allowed continued free access to the European Union market.

East African Community (EAC) ministers who met in Arusha, Tanzania, on September 20 agreed to push for a meeting with their EU counterparts, possibly before the September 30 deadline, to discuss the latter’s new proposals.

Top on the agenda is to convince the EU to prepare a legal instrument to enable a smooth transition of Kenya’s exports from the duty-free regime of the Market Access Regulation (MAR) to the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) regime.

Tanzania Breweries Mbeya Plant 

Dar es Salaam. Investors with Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) will smile all the way to the bank as the beer brewer has upped its dividend payout by 50 per cent during the year to March 31st 2014, thanks to an increase in pre-tax profit.

The firm’s board’s chairman, Mr Cleopa Msuya said in Dar es Salaam recently that investors will earn a Sh450 dividend per share, following a pre-tax profit of Sh278.040 billion registered during the year to March 2014.

A total of Sh132.718 billion has been approved as dividend from the profit registered during the year ending 31st March, 2014.

Wakazi wa kata ya Manzese na mtaa wa Mvuleni iliyopo Jijini Dar es Salaam wamepokea zaidi ya shilingi milioni 100 kutoka benki ya Azania kwa ajili ya kuboresha makazi yao duni.

Fedha hizo zinazotolewa kwa udhamini wa asasi inayoshughulikia na uboreshwaji wa makazi duni nchini Tanzaia ya Tanzania Financial Services for Underserved Settlement (TAFSUS) itatolewa kama mikopo ya kati ya shilingi milioni 1.5 mpaka milioni 9 kwa kila kaya.

Chief Executive Officer, MeTL Group, Hon. Mohammed Dewji

Dar es Salaam. The Chief Executive Officer of Mohammed Enterprise Limited (METL), Mr Mohammed Dewji, has been recognized by Choiseul 100 Africa as among the top ten active young people in the continent for their contribution to the emergence of Africa as a major player in the global economy.

Mr Dewji is among other ten businessmen from across the continent who have been identified and ranked the young African leaders of 40 years old and under, who play a major role in the development of Africa.

Choiseul 100 Africa is an original annual study carried out by the Institute Choiseul headquartered in Paris, France.

The institute mainly identifies growing business leaders, successful entrepreneurs, investors, and others who embody the dynamism and renewal of a whole continent and carry the hopes of an entire generation.

The study involves 42 countries from the continent and Mr Dewji was the only candidate from Tanzania.

“Dear Mr Dewji, I am pleased to send you our ranking “100 Choiseul Africa” of young African business leaders.

DODOMA UNIVERSITY AND RUTGERS UNIVERSITY SIGN MOU ON ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS

The Dodoma University Vice Chancellor Professor Idris Kikula and Rutgers University Chancellor Richard Edwards sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two universities on academic partnership during a brief and colorful ceremony held at New Jersey  Rutgers University campus yesterday. 

President Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete delivers his public lecture on “The role of Academic Partnerships in Finding Solutions to Global Challenges and Advancing Tanzania’s Priorities,” at Rutgers University in New Jersey United States yesterday. The public lecture was preceded by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Dodoma and Rutgers Universities on academic partnerships.
