GEITA GOLD MINING, GEITA PROUD OF NYANKUMBU SECONDARY SCHOOL'S FORM FOUR RESULTS

Some Nyankumbu Secondary School students studying in the library. This science school has more than 1,050 students, it is well equiped with laboratory equipment, 36 modern houses for teachers, 21 classrooms and various playgrounds. Along with other economic and social development projects, Geita Gold Mining has invested Shs 10 billion into the construction of this large and modern school.

While the Regional and District Commissioners encourage parents to send their children to join Secondary schools, Nyankumbu Girls' Secondary School has been overwhelmed by the number of requests from parents to register their children in the school due to good performance and a good learning environment.

The Government School, built and launched in 2014 by the Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) in group effort with the Geita Town Council through the company's corporate social responsibility fund, has been named as a rescuer for female students in the region.

GGML spent a total of Shs 15 billion in the construction of the boarding school as well as improving the infrastructure of other schools in the region with the aspiration of supporting the Government's efforts in improving the education sector in the country.

Speaking to our reporter yesterday, the Principal of the school, Georgia Mugashe said that in this academic year it has registered 240 form one students while they had a number of applicants and had to leave others due to large number of applications.

She said that the school with more than 1,050 students has been a savior to the Geita community due to the good performance in the fourth form exams results along with a good learning environment including the good infrastructure put up by GGML.

She noted that according to the form four results of 2022, all students have passed and no one has received division zero.

"A total of 38 students got division I, 86 Division II, 36 Division III and six student with Division IV. So you can see the efforts we are making to ensure that they all get division one and even in the 2021 results, 50 student got division one.

"We are very grateful to GGML because you can't believe this is a government school due to the awareness of parents bringing their children here. There is nothing else that attracts them more than good results and a good learning environment and most parents like their children to stay in the boarding school," she said.

In addition, she said due to the awareness and awakening of parents, the number of students has increased and the school is overcrowded and the existing dormitories are not enough.

She has called upon the stakeholders as well as other people to continue supporting the Government and GGML in improving the environment of the school.

Commenting on the results, the Vice President of AngloGold Ashanti who oversees sustainable projects in Ghana and Tanzania, Simon Shayo said it is exciting and encouraging to see the school that GGML has established with the aim of improving education in Geita region, doing well and attracting parents.

He said GGML has been at the forefront of supporting the Government's efforts as it has also built infrastructure in schools in Bugando and Kamena which have started receiving advanced level students from the year 2021/2022.

"A total of Shs 287.5 million was spent on these two schools and in collaboration with the Geita Town Council, these funds were provided through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) fund," he said.

And the Chairman of the school board from the parents' side, Eliangikaya Mshana also thanked GGML for continuing to help parents and the Geita community to improve the educational environment in the region to enable the school to become a model school in the Geita region.
