DAR ES SALAAM, MAY 24th, 2022: Plans have been set in motion at a Roundtable meeting convened by the High Commission of Rwanda in collaboration with the CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt) where Tanzanian business executives laid out a shared agenda for the upcoming Commonwealth Business Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, on June 21-23, 2022.

During his address to CEOs cutting across different sectors in Tanzania, the High Commissioner of Rwanda to Tanzania, Major General Charles Karamba expressed that the upcoming Commonwealth Business Forum will seek to “transform challenges into exciting opportunities” by providing innovations and solutions to global and regional challenges including climate change, technology proliferation, access to healthcare and expanding consumer markets.

Mr. John Bosco Kalisa, CEO & Executive Director of the East African Business Council (EABC) stated “Commonwealth Countries boast a total population of 2.61billion, this is a huge consumer base that can be exploited”. He noted that the East African Community (EAC) is chosen as the prefered destination for trade and investment due to the harmonisation of regional legal systems, growing intra-regional trade supported by dynamic and vibrant agriculture, manufacturing as well as service-oriented sectors and the recent roll-out of digital infrastructure.

His sentiment was precisely echoed by Prof. Godius Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade who noted that the African nations stand to prosper most from the upcoming Commonwealth Business Forum due to the existing trade, business and legal frameworks in place including SADC, COMESA, ECOWAS which seek to promote trade across Africa. Securing strategic partnerships and delivering sustainable development are the key focuses of the Tanzanian government, the upcoming forum certainly presents an opportunity to further realise this goal.

Ms. Louise Kanyonga, Chief Strategist, Rwanda Development Board, emphasised that the Commonwealth Business Forum offers an venue for information exchange between developed and developing economies in order to encourage innovation and expand investment ties.

The Commonwealth Business Forum 2022 theme is Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming, affirming the shared common values between Commonwealth nations spanning from traditions and language to governance and legal structures. The Commonwealth Business Forum 2022 experience has been designed to provide different ways to create meaningful connections, exchange knowledge and contribute to impactful dialogue; which are all areas of priority for the CEOrt. The CEOrt’s Executive Director, Ms. Santina Majengo Benson, emphasised on the importance of the forum after four years of absence due to the fleeting Covid-19 pandemic. She noted “in-person collaboration and engaged discourse are key ingredients in developing long lasting and impactful socio-economic solutions for the betterment of society.”

Every two years, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) meet to discuss how they may pool their resources and ideas to turn shared challenges into new opportunities. In 2022, the Commonwealth Business Forum 2022 will be hosted in Rwanda and will be the first and largest in-person gathering for Governments and Business across the Commonwealth since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
