VODACOM M-PESA 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS COME TO A CLIMATIC END

Vodacom Tanzania Corporate Affair Director, Rosalynn Mworia ignites the engine for Lucy Sarah Ismail, the 10th winner of the M-pesa car handed over to her during the campaign's climax event in Dar es Salaam over the weekend. The campaign ran for 10 weeks, saw a total number of 10 M-pesa customers walking home with brand new cars and other 120 winners winning a total of 120 million.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 14 September 2018: In a celebration that culminated the commemoration of the 10 year anniversary of M-Pesa, Vodacom Tanzania has handed over the last brand new Renault KWID 2017 Model to Lucy Sarah Ismail from Dar es Salaam City. Lucy is the final winner in the 10 week campaign that saw 10 brand new Renault KWID cars and TZS 120 million handed given out to customer, merchants and staff.

The ten-week long host of festivities in appreciation of the over 8.2 million M-Pesa customers observed the journey of the mobile money platform from its humble beginnings as a gateway for money transfers to a robust ecosystem of services including payment for utilities, mobile banking, savings and loans and a secure platform for international transactions. In fact, nowadays, any vendor or service provider not accepting M-Pesa will be left behind.

Speaking at the final handover ceremony, the Acting Managing Director, Hisham Hendi reflected on the evolution of the mobile money platform in Tanzania; “technology has remarkably advanced the capabilities of M-Pesa allowing 55% of the population access to financial services. We recognize this significant milestone in the history of our company and the contribution of our customers, wakalasand other partners in the success of M-Pesa in Tanzania – the best is yet to come.’

M-Pesa has and continues to make a huge contribution to the economy as 37% of total national GDP goes through M-Pesa daily, over 200,000 job created through M-Pesa and over 20,000 business transact through M-Pesa daily. The ripple effects on the economy will continue to be felt as innovative technology solutions enhance the customer experience and strengthen the quality of our services.

Earlier this year, M-Pesa was certified by GSMA for security and operational excellence placing it on the global arena as one of the first operators to receive such a prestigious endorsement. This week M-Pesa On Monday, 10.09.2018, Vodacom M-Pesa unveiled the first online card in Tanzania – the M-Pesa virtual card in partnership with MasterCard and BancABC that allows customers to transact on the online local and global retail market safely and easily. This most recent launch comes just weeks after the company introduced another first with the QR Code in the M-Pesa App.

Making his final remarks at the handover ceremony, Hisham said, ‘our customers are at the heart of everything we do and that is why we are delighted to be on this journey with Tanzanians as we lead the country in the digital era through innovation not only in M-Pesa but enabling connectivity through our super network.’
