JUMA MWAPACHU APPOINTED AIRTEL BOARD CHAIRMAN

Dar es Salaam. March 16, 2015. Former East African Community secretary-general Juma Mwapachu is the new board chairman of Airtel Tanzania, Bharti Airtel announced in a statement yesterday. Mr Christian de Faria, Airtel Africa’s chief executive officer was also the chairman of Airtel Tanzania before Mr Mwapachu’s appointment.

Ambassador Mwapachu is the immediate former secretary general of the East African Community, a position he held between April 2006 and April 2011.

He is a law graduate of the University of Dar es Salaam. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in International Law, International Institutions and Diplomacy from the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy, New Delhi, India. He holds two honorary degrees in literature and political sciences from the University of Dar es Salaam and the National University of Rwanda respectively.

Speaking on the appointment, Mr Christian de Faria, Airtel Africa’s CEO said, “We are pleased to have Ambassador Mwapachu leading our Board in Tanzania. His wealth of experience will add immense value to the board and provide strategic guidance to our operations in Tanzania. We believe he will also help establish meaningful relationships with our stakeholders in the country.”

For his part, Ambassador Mwapachu said he was grateful for having an opportunity to join Airtel’s board of directors and promised meaningful contribution of the telecommunications sector integration and economic development.

“Along with my fellow board members and the management team, I will strive to build on the well-established strengths of the company and take Airtel Tanzania to higher heights of performance and customer satisfaction,” he said.

“Telecom plays a key role in the growth of our economy as well as in deepening regional integration. With greater technological and marketing innovations supported by a more enabling fiscal regime, it should be possible for this sector to contribute more significantly to national development,” he added.
