TANZANIA REFUSES WORK PERMIT FOR KENYAN EXECUTIVE

Sylvia Mulinge heads back to Safaricom after Tanzania declined to issue her with a work permit to take up an MD job in Vodacom.
Tanzania's largest telecom Vodacom has confirmed that a work permit application for Sylvia Mulinge who had been appointed as its managing director was declined by the Labour Commissioner.

She was to assume office on June 1.

In a statement Friday, the telco said it would begin the search to replace the Kenyan national.

“Vodacom Tanzania remains fully committed to identifying a candidate that will not only inspire confidence in investors but also have the requisite governance capability as CEO of a listed company.

“Naturally, we are disappointed, and we regret the Labour Commissioner’s decision. We will be engaging with the authorities. We are confident that Vodacom Tanzania has a strong management team in place to lead the company effectively until the search for a suitable candidate is finalised,” the company's chairman Mr Ali Mufuruki said.

Currently, Mr Hisham Hendi is Vodacom’s acting chief executive officer.
The telco, which listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) last year, did not give reasons for the government's decision on Ms Mulinge's work permit. However, media reports earlier had suggested that authorities believed that there were Tanzanians who could do the job.

FACEBOOK HACKED, UP TO 50 MILLION ACCOUNTS ATTACKED

Facebook has discovered a security flaw affecting about 50 million user accounts which could have allowed attackers to take over the accounts, the social networking company said on Friday.

Facebook has since fixed the vulnerability and informed law enforcement, it said.

Attackers stole Facebook access tokens through its “view as” feature, which they could then use to take over people’s accounts. “View as” is a feature that allows users to see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

Facebook has reset the access tokens of the 50 million affected accounts, it said. As a precaution, the company has reset access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have looked up through the “view as” option in the last year.

"Since we've only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed," the company said in a blog post.

The Nipe Fagio Executive Director Ms. Ana Rocha said today that the Interact-Bio project has constructed a vertical garden, a compost bin and an insect hotel for Dar es Salaam residents to learn how they can integrate nature in urban settings to reap the benefits of bio-diversity. “We are working with City Councils to raise awareness on the benefits of nature in the cities of Dar es Salaam and Arusha as well as the Moshi municipality. We want people to see the value of having nature in the city and how nature in an urban setting can mitigate problems like excessive heat and other environmental and climatic conditions”.

She said a vertical garden is a garden made from wood frames, steel grills, pallets, composts, and plastic bottles or pots to grow flowers and vegetables on walls and other support systems as an alternative to growing plants on the ground. This innovative technique can be used to create living screens between different areas, providing space for nature in urban settings while allowing city residents to maximize usage of limited space.
