The VSOMO application which is an e-learning programme being implemented by Airtel Tanzania in partnership with the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) has proven to be one of the key solutions towards the country’s drive on industrialization.
This has been said by the VETA-Kipawa ICT Instructor Abdul Mollel during the practical sessions for the students who have enrolled and register for courses offered by VETA through the VSOMO application.
VSOMO application allows students to get vocational training through their mobile phones and they only attend classes during practical sessions.
‘We have a lot of students wishing to get vocational training but we cannot accommodate them at once. VSOMO is now our solution to that. The government is currently pushing for industrialization in order to support the country’s economy. Courses offered through VSOMO will expand the reach to studies willing to take vocational training leading them to self-employment. More so, the courses also sharpen and equip them with knowledge on small entrepreneurs. This is the most crucial area as they can lead them towards on small scale industries’ said Mollel.
‘Confidence is the key for success. Most of our students are youth who are dedicated on taking our country on next level. We have been able to make them believe in their skills and as you can see, most of them here have enrolled themselves for the courses in less than six months but now they are able to perform practical’s themselves, added Mollel.
What Airtel Tanzania has done to support this programme clearly indicates the firm’s commitment in supporting government initiative towards industrialization, said Mollel.
The ICT instructor said that after the practical session which last for 60 hours, the students will be awarded with certificates which will enable to get employment or employ themselves.
Speaking at the same event, Airtel Tanzania Public Relations Manager Jackson Mmbando said Airtel decided to partner with VETA in providing vocational training skills to Tanzanians interested in joining VETA through e-learning as they understand that there are many of them out who want to get the skills but don’t have enough time to attend classes.
‘VSOMO application allows students to acquire vocational skills without physically attending to classes. All one needs to register to the programme and pay tuition fee then will be able to start enjoying classes even without internet buddle’s, said Mmbando.
The programme has so far attracted over 30,000 studies that have been able to register and 9,000 out of that number have registered for the studies. Each course is 120,000/- and a student is issued with certificate after completion of the course.
Courses offered through VSOMO are Cake Baking and Decoration, Catering and Food Service Techniques, PC Maintenance, Industrial Electrical Installation, Domestic Plumbing and Auto-electric.
